I thought we could take Cathy to the Rex Pictures later this afternoon to see the “Swiss Family Robinson.

“That would be nice said Rose; I will need to take a bath first though unless you want me to clear out the picture house with the smell of kippers.

Cathy laughed as she poured tomato ketchup on her chips.

George liked the steak and kidney pudding with its own gravy as he cut into it as he explained that they could have a look for empty shops afterwards.

“Yes that would be a good idea said Rose.

George looked at the racing pages of the Daily Mirror newspaper whilst he was eating.

He picked out three horses at Ling field, General Custer, Armadillo, fire fly. He chose traps 2-4 in a forecast dog bet.

He went into his jacket and wrote out the bet.

When he had finished eating he waited until Rose was finished before thanking Alice for the meal.

Rose told George that Irene Johnson the charge hand quit her job.

“Apparently she is moving out of the area all together.

“Good luck to her I say said George They walked up the bank to the bus stop and had to sit down in Northumberland Square until George recovered.

When the bus came they all got on and George paid the fares

“What time is it George?

“Its two twenty already”

“Right whilst you two get ready I’m going to the bookies so he stayed on the bus until the next stop. Rose and Cathy got off and crossed the road to the house.

George put on his bet at the counter.

“Hi George; are you having a flutter?

“Yes; I have got to give you folks a chance to win back the money I took from you.”

“How much we putting on then; thirty bob?

“No I want to put on twenty pounds on each.”

“George are you sure?

“Yes; to win big you have to risk big.”

“It’s your money.”

“Yes but it will be yours if I win he laughed.”

“I’m not trying to be funny George but you have backed two horses at 50-1 and another at 25-1 when the favourite Starburst Wonder is odds on to win. It is throwing good money after bad.”

“We will see then won’t we; my first one is off in five minutes.”

“Do you want to take the prices George?

“Yes please.”

Mavis gave him his betting slips and he checked them before sitting down to watch the first race.
