“Come; I will show you around. Rose showed her the kitchen and the bathroom and toilet.

Where would my friends stay if they were to come? They could sleep in the spare room where there are two bunks; now, if there is only one of your friends coming to stay then I will make up a bed for you, where the two of you can use this room.

Is that alright?

“I suppose so.” Does George have a record player because at the home we have one and we play records and dance?

“I will ask George when he comes back.”

“I want to make you something nice for you tea so can you tell me what you like to eat?

At the home we have sausages eggs and chips; fish, chips and beans, mince an tatties with neaps.”

“Do you not eat Sunday roast?

“No not very often

“Do you like salads?

“Yes, I like salad with ham and boiled eggs.

Okay would you like a salad for tea tonight? I can make some potatoes with it.

“What about some chips instead?”

“If you wish can you help peel the potatoes for me whilst I prepare the salad?

“The potatoes are out of George’s allotment he grows just about everything we eat which saves us a lot of money.”

“I thought George was a lecturer, is he not rich?

“No he isn’t and at the moment I’m just a fish wife until I find premises to start my own business.

“You are a Fish wife what do you do?

“I work with herring and make them into kippers in a factory on the Fish Quay.

“I hate herring and I hate the smell of kippers as well.”

“I’m sorry about that Cathy but I had to make a living some how after your father beat me and left me for dead.”

“My father did this to you?

“Yes and it wasn’t the first time either.”

I have had to travel the length and breadth of England looking for work. I thought about you all that time and never gave up hope of finding you and bringing you back home.

Scotland is our home mother we are Scottish. I have chosen to make a new life for myself here Cathy Scotland has too many bad memories for me. George has been a real angel and he took me in after a land lord was going to do the same to me as what your father did.

“Has your father been in touch with you?

“Yes, he writes to me and sends letters he said that you left him.”

“Listen to me Cathy; I would never lie to you. Your father has a vicious temper and believe me I have been on the end it. “I never want to see him again as long as I live.
