Mollie was happy feeding the animals and putting fresh straw down for them. She asked if she could ride Bella later and Colin said that she could but only after they had done the cabbage fields.

Cassie was allowed out now and followed Colin and Mollie around the farm.

We can take Bella and you can help me round up the sheep if you like. We have got to check their feet today for signs of infection. We give them medication too so I will show you how that is done.

“When do the sheep get sheared then Colin?

Early spring so they have time to grow a new woollen fleece for the winter.

“What happens to all that wool then?

“It goes off to get washed and then dyed then it’s made into jumpers and woollen coats.”

“How long have you worked on this farm Colin?

“I came here when I was a boy and worked for Mr Jackson until Mr Ross bought the farm I was only twenty years old when he put me in charge of the whole farm and gave me that cottage to live in.

“In six years time I could be running my own farm then.”

You could; if you work hard.”

“Well I want you to teach me everything so I can be a farmer like you.”

“Come on then I will show you where the insecticide is and how much to use for each field.

They hooked up a massive crop sprayer to the back of the tractor before adding the insecticide.

Now Mollie you must always where gloves when doing this because it is very poisonous. Wash your ands and face after as well because if you licked your finger you could get seriously ill and even die from it.

Does it not poison people when they eat the cabbages?

“No because the cabbages and onions are thoroughly washed before going to the process plant. You have to learn and keep records of every field that you plant on because you cannot grow the same crop on that land every year. You must rotate your crops. Where you grew onions that year, the next it could be turnip or cabbage.

“You cannot pickle turnip can you?

“Yes, but we grow it here to feed the sheep in the winter when they cannot get to the grass when it is covered in snow.

Then there is the lambing in spring which you have to help the ewe; that is a female sheep that gives birth to the lambs; we will come to that next spring.”

Get yourself a can of juice or pop to drink because it is going to be a hot day and we won’t finish until about six tonight; Carol my wife has made us some sandwiches and a nice piece of cake.

He gave Mollie a pair of rubber gloves to wear then the two of them boarded the tractor. “Now watch what I do Mollie because you cannot be a farmer if you cannot drive. Colin started the engine and put the tractor in gear then took his foot of the clutch and away they went. When they got to the end of the field, Colin told Mollie that the tractor had to be kept to the edge where the hedge row was because they didn’t want to trample on the crops by going across it.
