It was a warm evening so Bobby took the convertible white Triumph TR4.

“Where are we going Bobby?

“You want to see a show so that’s where we are going; do you like live bands because that’s where we are going.”

Who are we going to see?

This guy called “Donovan” he’s our answer to Bob Dylan he’s being supported by Martin Carthy who I have seen before.

They reached the venue which was called the Oasis at seven thirty and Bobby went to bar they had and got them drinks.

A lot of people were standing but Bobby had organised sets for him and Irene through a friend so they sat down right at the front.

“You certainly know a lot of people don’t you?

“You have to be in the know in business Irene or you wouldn’t get anywhere.”

How old were you when you started out?

 “I was about 14 years old. “

“Really?

“Yes I made my first jar of pickles after I heard someone in a fish and chip shop ask if they had any pickled onions and I set about growing them in my grandfather’s allotment then going around the chippies with them in a barrow. I made enough money to expand the business, I bought my first farm land when I was 18 years old and grew my own onions of various sizes and from there here I am.

 “Remarkable,

“The simplest of ideas can make money.”

Martin Carthy came on stage to a round of applause; he broke into his first number “The Boney Black Hare” then “Smoke and Dust.”

“He’s really good said Irene; as she listened to the words of the folk singer.

After he had sang his first two numbers Martin thanked everyone for coming and hoped they would all enjoy a celebration of music.

He sang for an hour finishing with “Father and guiding Spirit. The whistles and cheers went up as he left the stage and Donovan came on wearing a blue coloured cap.

His first number was “The Universal Soldier” which everyone sang along to.

“Mellow Yellow” followed then “Saffron.” Bobby got them some more drinks then sat back down.”

Donovan finished his set with The Hurdy Gurdy Man,” Colours, and “Catch the Wind.”

Irene was even more surprised when both Donovan and Martin came over to shake Bobby by the hand.”

Unbeknown to Irene but Bobby had helped both singers when they were struggling artists and they never forgot his kindness.

“This is a friend of mine; she’s called Irene

“It a real pleasure to meet such a beautiful woman said Donovan.”
