picture of Tynemouth Priory drawn on it then painted and then given three coats of varnish.

George took out the Rizzler cigarette papers and a hunk of Old Holborn then spread the tobacco along the cigarette paper then licked the gum along its edge and then rolled it so that the two ends came together into a cylindrical tube. He bounced the cigarette a couple of times on the table times to separate the tobacco to let more air in then lit it and inhaled the smoke into his lungs then let out a satisfied stream of smoke.

He replaced the lid on the tin and put it back into his pocket. He sipped on his mug of tea and felt a lot better.

“Alice came over and brought him the Daily Mirror to read and took away the tray with the empty plates. He took out his glasses and put them on then scanned the racing pages.

He had a chambers betting slip in his pocket and he quickly picked out three horses that were running at Newmarket Race Course. Then he picked out a couple of dog bets to put on as well as well. When he’d finished he put the bets into his coat then stood up. After replacing the cap over his black wavy hair he fastened the buttons on his jacket. For all he only had one leg George was still a handsome looking man with a square jaw and soft features. He had startling blue eyes that drew you in like a clear blue sea. Since the death of his wife and children the thirty seven year old hadn’t even looked at another woman in that way. That was until a woman entered the Mission and was looking for somewhere to sit and found Georges table was the only one that was free.

“Excuse me said the young woman do you mind if I sit here as all the other tables are being used. George removed his cap and flicked back his Brylcreemed hair with his fingers.

“Please Miss Sit down; I was just ordering another pot of tea would you care to join me?

“Would you mind?”

“No, not at all; George pulled out the seat for her then asked Alice if she would bring a pot of tea and some cake.

When Alice brought the tea and cake George paid her then poured the tea out.

Alice smiled as she took the money from him as again he’d given her another tanner tip.

“I’m sorry said the girl who was dressed in a white overall and had her red hair tied back. “ My name Is Margaret Rose; I’m from Edinburgh in Scotland “I work for Ballard’s kipper factory.”

“I thought I hadn’t seen you before in here as I come here every day for my dinner. My name is George Wilkinson; my friends call me Geordie.

“Garbutt; that’s my surname; I get Maggie or Morag.

“I shall call you Rose as you are as beautiful as any rose that I have grown in my allotment. It’s a bit difficult to dig with this leg these days but; I manage.”

“What happened?

“I was on the wrong end of a German Shell during the war; so was my wife and children.” I was the lucky one; I survived.
