How long have you lived here then Edna asked George?

“Well; I bought the house eight months after Lizzy died and I’ve been here ever since.

“Your cake is delicious by the way Edna.”

Thank you it’s made from a recipe handed down by my family for many years.

“Do you have family Edna?

“Aye I do, but you know what they are like these days; you see them at Christmas and birthdays only.”

“No one takes care of the elderly now, I was different in my day; I visited my gran nearly every day.

“How things change Edna.”

“Yes they certainly do, but it is up to the parents to keep traditions alive.”

“How many Grand children have you?

“I have three Margaret, Bronia, Janet, and James; they are little darlings. James reminds me so much of William my son.

“I get lonely here on my own since Robert passed away.”

“I’m sorry said George.”

“We had fifty good years together, I cannot complain.”

“How long have you been together then George?

“Not long really Edna, but I love her more every day.”

“I can see that, it stands out like a cobbler’s thumb.” Oh look there is Janice now if you hurry you will catch her before she closes the door.

“Rose ran out of the house then called Janice Barber who was just inserting the key in the door.”

Jan turned then walked towards the gate as Rose came out to meet her.

They were chatting away as George came out with the bags and the flowers.

“This is George my man, said Rose with a smile.”

“Hello Janice, I’ve been talking with Edna your neighbour who has told us so much about you.”

Edna doesn’t go out much these days since Robert passed away you know.”

“Yes she is very lonely.”

“I should call on her but I don’t like to intrude.”

“I’m sure she would welcome you as she did us and we are strangers.

“Have you managed to find anything out about Cathy, Rose?

“Yes; Jan has told me where we can find Cathy; she is in Falkirk with another family.”

“She has given me an address and a number of the welfare department. We will have to ring them tomorrow morning.

“We will have to find a place to stay tonight are there any guest houses around here Jan?

There’s the Glenmoore down the street Rose, tell her that I sent you. Moira Stewart is a very good host.

“Thank you Janice said George they were about to walk away when Rose gave Jan the bouquet of flowers. Please take these and give them to Edna. I think she needs a friend right now.
