“George it is Sunday tomorrow.”

“Oh I have to ring Tom Hadaway right now I was invited for dinner.”

George left the table and rang his friend to cancel dinner; he didn’t tell him about Rose or her daughter but just said he had to travel to Scotland in the morning.

Tom was okay about it; he said he would see him when he got back.

Both George and Rose went to their rooms and packed some clothes then they both had a bath by ten o’clock George told Rose he was going to bed. George undressed then he stood his false leg up by the side of the bed in case he needed to get up in the middle of the night to use the toilet. He sat reading a few more chapters of Dr Zhivago

Before he turned out the light by the side of his bed he lay on his side and was about to drift off to sleep when his bedroom door opened and in walked Rose wearing a night dress.

“Do you mind if I slept with you tonight. I could use some cuddles right now.”

George moved over and pulled back the candlewick bed spread and flannelette sheet.

Rose got in and rested her head on George’s bare chest. George placed his arm on Rose’s shoulder as they lay in silence. George made no attempt to make a move on Rose and was just happy with the intimacy between them; the time was not right for either of them. George wanted their moment to be special’ something memorable.

He didn’t feel uncomfortable in her company. It felt right somehow.

They both drifted off to sleep and the next morning they woke feeling more rested than they had ever been.

When Rose got up she thanked George for the night they had spent together.

“Many a man would have taken advantage of my vulnerability; you did not and I love you even more for it. She kissed him then went the bathroom and got ready whilst George made a flask of Nescafe coffee for the train and wrapped a sultana scone each placing it into a holdall along with his clothes and clean underwear. George took all his money with him and folded the cheque and placed it inside his wallet.

“Are you ready Rose the taxi is on its way?

Rose came out and George thrust a half slice of buttered toast in her mouth.

Then handed her the coat she always wore. George brought a brolly with him in case it rained. He put on a cap then they waited at the gate. Mrs Best his next door neighbour asked if they were going on a trip.

“Yes on business Mrs Best.”

“Are you taking your housekeeper with you? No she is visiting family in Scotland not that it’s any business of yours.”

The taxi pulled in at the kerb and George placed the cases in the back.

“Enjoy your trip then said Mrs Best with a snigger.”

George did not answer her but opened the back door to let Rose in then got into the front seat.

“Nosey old bag said the driver as he drove away.

George called in at the ticket office where their tickets were waiting for them.

They walked over the bridge to platform six where the train was already in.
