Rose kept herself busy by baking fresh bread and sultana scones; then she made Scotch broth that they made in Scotland. When she had finished she set the table.

George came in the back door and removed his gardening boot and removed his gardening false leg in the bedroom and put on the spare leg that he wore for everyday use.

He cleaned the stump just below his knee with a flannel then dried it. It was red with the digging he had done so he rubbed some Germaline into it from a small round tin that was kept in the bathroom cabinet.

“Are you alright George?

“Yes Rose; I’m Just changing my leg. George changed his trousers and washed before putting on a clean shirt.

He walked into the scullery as the smell of the broth hit his nostrils.

“My Rose that smells absolutely delicious. Please sit and I will serve it up for us there is some fresh bread if you would like to cut yourself a slice.

George took out the bread knife from the draw and the chopping board that was hanging on the wall. He placed the loaf onto the board the bread was still warm as he cut two thick slices.

The broth was put into two bowls then Rose sat down at the table.

“George I have been thinking about going to get Cathy all afternoon.

“Are you excited love?

“It’s hard to explain George; I feel anxious, worried, elated a terrified all at the same time.” “I am worried that Cathy will not remember me.

“What if she doesn’t want to leave her foster mother?”

“I cannot say Rose; until you see Cathy you will never know.”

“I guess you’re right.

“No matter what happens Cathy is your child and any court in the land cannot refuse a parent the right to her own child unless there is a danger to life.”

“You may not however be able to bring her home immediately Rose because we have to go through the legal channels first.

You have to give Cathy the chance to adjust to the idea that you are back and not going to abandon her.

“I never abandoned her George; she was taken from me after Gerald assaulted me.”

“You must put yourself in the mind of Cathy and how she feels. “ What would you feel like knowing your mother had just left you?”

“What if she hates me George?

Children are strange I know with my children the bond was always there and when I was at sea they missed me and when I came back they embraced me.

I’m sure Cathy will remember you and that bond that you made with her will not be broken.

George took Roses hand and held it. You will need to pack a case with clean clothes for a few days until this is sorted out. Once we reach Scotland I will ring the authorities.
