“So if I was to ask you out to a barn dance would you turn me down then?

Bobby Ross you are a fast worker aren’t you?

“I want to get in quick before someone else jumps in before me.”

“Irene flushed again and threw back her hair with her hand her blue eyes sparkled.

“She liked the man opposite her but didn’t want to get hurt again.

“Can I be honest with you Bobby?

“Yes go ahead; I’m waiting for the rejection.”

“You can understand my apprehension; I have been bitten once.

“I assure you Irene; I am an honourable man; and if you said no then I would understand. The way I see it is we are both looking for someone to make them laugh and restore their faith in human kind and I think you are that person.”

“You got hurt also; oh my God Bobby.”

“Yes she tried to take me to the cleaners but I got myself a slick solicitor who tore her to pieces in court. So you were married?

“Yes; five years but no children; she didn’t want them. She said she didn’t want the stretch marks. She liked to spend my money and never did a days’ work in her life.

Bobby pushed the dinner plate to one side then poured out the tea.

Sugar and milk Irene?

“Milk please.”

“Same as me he laughed. So what about this county dance; will you come?

“When is it?

Tomorrow evening; I could pick you up he said as he sampled the crumble.

“I have never been to a country dance before?

“Then you are in for one hell of a night.”

“Alright then, what time?

“If I picked you and your daughter up at say at 2pm would that be okay?

“You want my daughter to come too?

“Yes the kids love them; these are big family occasions as you will see. It’s at Creswell farm.

“How will I get back?

“Well, you can either stay over in my big house that has eight bedrooms, or you could stay in a hotel which I will pay for.”

“I would have to ring my boss and tell him.”

“I will leave that to you but I will come and pick you up tomorrow; I will take you and your daughter for lunch.” What’s her name anyway?

“You call her Mollie.”

“Is she pretty like you?

“Prettier she laughed.”

When they finish their meal Bobby took the tray back to the counter and gave Alice a £5.00 tip which was more than the cost of the meal. As Irene left Alice put her thumb in the air and Irene nodded.

When they got back to his van Bobby introduced Irene to Cassie the two year old Labrador.

“Mollie is going to love her. She is crazy about dogs.”

Bobby gave Irene a cheque for the kippers and loaded them on the van.
