The way George glided around the dance floor you wouldn’t have known he had only one good leg unless he told someone.

Rose was a capable dancer and followed Johns lead.

“You’re very good Rose who taught you?

“My father showed me when I was little; he would let me put my feet on his shoes and I would watch as he moved about our kitchen floor.

“You aren’t bad yourself you know.”

“When the music had finished George led Rose back to her seat.”

“You move well both of you said Sharon.”

“Not bad for our first dance said Rose.”

“Robert had gone to the bar to buy more drinks; whilst he was away Sharon asked if George and Rose would like to come to her house for dinner next week.

“We would love to, wouldn’t we Rose?

“Yes if I’m no doing anything said Rose.

“Well, I will leave it with you and if Rose cannot come; maybe you could still come George.”

“I will give you a ring anyway.”

“Please do Sharon.”

George felt decidedly uneasy after that; he wondered what he had done wrong.

He waited until the evening was over when Robert and Sharon dropped them off on their way home. They lived in Osborne Road in Jesmond; it was a large terraced house and was well decorated in an art deco style.

“Thank you for a lovely evening; it has been a pleasure meeting your new friend George.”

Good night said George as they pulled away in the sapphire blue Ford Escort.

Rose waved then turned to go into the house.”

“What is wrong Rose, have I done something wrong?

“I think we need to talk George.”

“Alright lets talk he said, as he removed his jacket then sat down in the armchair.

“I’m sorry George but your friends are such snobs, she was forever bragging about what she had whilst you and Robert were at the bar. I got the distinct impression that she did not like me; I was made to feel as if I was intruding.”

I’m sorry Rose; but Sharon is a well respected estate agent and I just thought….

“You thought what George; you didn’t ask me.” George I have only known you a few days and this is all too much. “I’m just a simple woman from Scotland working in a kipper factory.”

“You can be so much more Rose; if you would only let people help you.”

“George you are a lovely man but you know absolutely nothing about me.

“I know this much, you are a kind, caring person with ambition.”

“George I ran away for Scotland to get away from a man who abused and beat me so severely that I nearly died. I spent several weeks in hospital.

“Rose broke down as she went on to tell him that she got pregnant to this man and that she had the baby taken off her because she couldn’t cope with looking after a child and trying to work.

“I had no time to bond with my child.”
