3rd Person POV:

Vladimir gazed out at the rolling desert sands, the eerie fortress of The Shadow looming off in the distance. He didn’t know why this war was being fought, to be honest. Sarah was dead. Shouldn’t they all be giving up by now?

“Hey, what’s wrong?” said Dimitri, his short frame sticking out against the Elf’s tall stature. Vladimir sighed and raked his fingers through his long hair, which had grown back over night, and shrugged.

“This all just seems so pointless! Sarah’s dead! The prophecy can’t be fulfilled now,” he sighed, putting his head in his hands. Dimitri rolled his eyes, putting his hand on Vladimir’s shoulder. Vladimir pulled away.

“We cannot give up hope. Július and Alzbita wouldn’t have wanted that,” Dimitri said softly. Vladimir cringed at the names of his deceased friends. “Do it for them and their son,” Dimitri added. Vladimir chuckled.

Their son is a disgrace to their name! I caught him picking a fight with a Spring Fe! Of all of the Fe, he picked on the weakest! Although, Ancil did land a few good ones on him,” Vladimir sighed, rubbing his temple. Dimitri sat down next to him on the soft sand, trying to think of ways to comfort his life-long friend. Standing up, Vladimir brushed the grains of sand off of his pants and began to walk back towards the camp.

“I was going to begin training Zlo and Peter later today, but like I said, he got in a fight and he has several broken ribs. So much for that idea,” Vladimir muttered under his breath. Dimitri chuckled loudly.

“Well, that’s teenagers for you,” Dimitri laughed, nudging Vladimir playfully. “Yeah, I guess so,” Vladimir said, smiling slightly. “That’s the spirit!” Dimitri chortled, clapping Vladimir on the back. They laughed and walked back to the camp. To their surprise, they spotted Zlo and the two Fe he had fought with training together, giving each other tips on how to hold their daggers and such.

“No, you do not hold a sword like you would hold a dagger! Balance it in your hand…ah! Exactly! Now, we duel!” Ancil said, his eyes shining. Dimitri and Vladimir exchanged a shocked glance and rushed forward.

“Whoa, hold your horses! I think that’s enough training for now! Don’t you, Zlo?” Vladimir said, laughing nervously. “But I…” “No buts! Now, come help Vladimir and I…uh….do that…important thing! Yeah, an important thing!” Dimitri said, tugging on Zlo’s sleeve. Zlo rolled his eyes, but he followed the Elf and Dwarf willingly. He trudged beside Vladimir, his hands in his pockets.

“So…how do you feel?” Vladimir said, breaking the uncomfortable silence. Zlo grinned and looked back at the two sprites. “I feel a lot better! Ancil and Gaëtan felt bad, so they came to see me. Ancil is a healer! He fixed me!” he said. Vladimir tried to smile.

“I’m a healer too,” he growled under his breath. “What was that?” “Nothing,” Vladimir said quickly. Ancil thinks he so much better than me just because he’s a Spring Fe! Well, I’ll show him, Vladimir thought, smirking. Why do I even care who Zlo likes better?! He killed Alex! But, he’s Július and Alzbita’s son. He’s just like his dad, Vladimir thought, smiling at Zlo fondly. Well, except that his hair is white. Wait, didn’t it used to be brown?

“We’re almost there!” Dimitri said in a sing-song voice. Vladimir caught up to him. “I thought Zlo doing ‘an important thing’ was just to get him away from Ancil,” he hissed in Dimitri’s ear, which was pretty hard, since he was about three feet shorter.

“It was, but there are things that need doing around camp! I wouldn’t make up something off the top of my head if I didn’t have anything to back it up with!” Dimitri hissed back. Vladimir rolled his eyes until they came upon a group of soldiers pitching more tents, cooking food, and gathering dried cacti leaves for firewood.

“I told you. Troops are pouring in from all over. Even a few dark Elves have joined us,” Dimitri said, smiling. Vladimir’s stomach churned. “Not…?” Dimitri shook his head. “No, he’s not here.” Vladimir sighed with relief and turned to Zlo.

“You’re going to help set up new parts of camp, cook for the soldiers, etc. If you have any questions, we’ll be in the commanding tent,” I told Zlo, patting him on the shoulder. He sighed and ran past them and into the camp. Vladimir and Dimitri chuckled as Zlo was put right to work scrubbing dirty pots and pans.

“Hmm…he hardly complained at all. That’s a good sign. Maybe Peter is starting to have a good influence on him!” Vladimir said with delight. Dimitri cocked his head slightly, as if he were thinking.

“Yes…do you think we can trust him enough yet?” he said, looking around cautiously. “I do,” Vladimir said. “Well, alright. Bahadur and I will tell him tonight at the evening meal,” Dimitri said. Vladimir shuffled his feet awkwardly. “Actually…I wanted to tell him. You know, since he’s my nephew and all,” Vladimir muttered. Dimitri face palmed.

“Of course! How could I have forgotten!” Dimitri laughed, clapping Vladimir on the back. Vladimir smiled uneasily and hefted his bow farther up his shoulder. He tried to keep his face void of emotion, but Dimitri had known Vladimir for too long and he knew that something was wrong. He nudged him, and Vladimir sighed.

“I just…what if he doesn’t like me?” Vladimir blurted. “Why on earth would you think he doesn’t like you?!” Dimitri said, appalled. Vladimir shrugged helplessly. “There are so many people here that he could like so much more than me.”

“Like Ancil?”

“Oh, Vladimir, don’t be stupid! Ancil is such a pansy! And he’s so cocky, too! Zlo will see him for what he is soon enough,” Dimitri said, smiling. Vladimir smiled back and the two friends walked back to the main part of the camp, The Secret weighing down heavily on their minds.
