24. Chapter 23

November 19th, 2015

Sarah’s POV:
Zlo set me down gently on the ground in front of a throne made of human bones. He kissed my forehead softly, and I pulled away. I felt so weak and helpless…I hated it. “My master will be here soon. I’ll stay right here beside you,” he whispered into my ear. I shivered when our eyes locked. His silver eyes were filled with insanity, even when he was trying to be kind.

“Ah, Zlo, it’s been a long time,” a new voice rasped. When I heard the voice, terror rushed through me. It was the thing of nightmares. The figure that followed was even more horrific. He seemed to be made of shadows. I could tell that he was a person, but his form flickered and moved around like liquid. His eyes were just two yellow orbs underneath his hood.

“Miss Wagner, it’s been a long time. Seventeen years, to be exact,” the figure chuckled, cupping my chin with his gnarled hands. I pulled away, backing up as quickly as I could. “Oh Sarah, there’s no escape now. You’re mine,” he hissed. He nodded at Zlo, who pulled out the dagger he always kept with him.

“I’ve been waiting to do this for a long time,” he chuckled maniacally, his silver eyes gleaming with anticipation. “Zlo, why are you doing this?! I thought you cared about me!” I cried, standing up as best as I could. “I do. But I’m crazy too, remember?” he said, giggling. He poised the dagger and I closed my eyes, waiting for death to come.

“Sarah, no!” a familiar voice screamed. Just as Zlo brought the knife down, Alex ran into the room, getting in front of the blade. He let out a gasp of pain as Zlo stabbed him. Zlo’s eyes widened in shock, and he quickly drew the blade out. Alex crumpled to the ground, lifeless. I knelt down beside him, cradling his head in my arms.
“No, Alex! Stay awake! Please!” I sobbed, rocking back and forth. The blood spurting out of the wound in Alex’s chest made a small puddle around us. “S…Sarah,” he croaked, placing a hand on my cheek. Three more people rushed into the room. They were probably Alex’s companions.

“No! Alex!” one of them shouted, rushing forward. The other two, a bulky elf and a dwarf, held him back. He collapsed to his knees, his blonde hair hanging down in front of his face. Alex winced and then looked up at me, his brown eyes filled with pain, his flaming red hair plastered to his forehead with sweat.
“Sarah, I need to tell you something,” Alex whispered hoarsely. “No, no you need to rest. Save your energy,” I said softly. He shook his head. “I lo…I love…” His voice trailed off as his body went limp. He was dead.

“NO! ALEX, NO!” I screamed, shaking his shoulders. He couldn’t be dead! Not Alex! Anybody but Alex! I sobbed into his chest and rocked back and forth, not wanting to believe that he was dead. He couldn’t be. No. I looked up us Zlo began to walk towards me. I stood up, looking into his eyes.
His silver eyes seemed to pierce into my soul. They were filled with anger and malice, and the will to kill. His face was twisted into a hideous smirk, and his white hair hung over his eyes. I backed away as fast as I could, not wanting to be near his knife, which was already covered in blood, Alex’s blood.

“Sarah, how could you not love me?” he hissed, his Slovak accent sharp and cold. His smirk turned into a psychotic grin, and I covered my eyes, not wanting to look. “What made you be so awful?!” I screamed, tears welling up in my eyes. His grin faded.

“Life did. What else?” he said. With one swift movement, he brought down the knife and stabbed me in the heart. I gasped in pain and fell to the ground, blood spurting out of my wound. “You’re insane,” I said weakly, the life ebbing out of my body. “What did you expect?” he giggled. The last thing I saw was him kicking away Alex’s body before my eyes closed forever.
