13. Chapter 12

November 12th, 2015

~~Alex’s POV:
Sarah was gone! Someone had taken her, kidnapped her when no one was paying attention! The entire castle was in chaos! Queen Anastasia had fainted and had been taken up to her room. Kind Windtwist’s bellows of outrage could be heard throughout the entire castle, maybe even the entire kingdom! I paced in the halls, biting my nails down to the quick and wiping away droplets of sweat from my forehead. She can’t be gone. She can’t be gone. If she’s gone, she’s already dead!  My thoughts screamed, causing tears to well up in my eyes.
“SEARCH EVERYWHERE! RAID VILLAGES, OVER TURN MOUNTAINS, I DON’T CARE! JUST GET MY DAUGHTER BACK!” King Windtwist bellowed, a just of hot wind blowing away a swarm of unlucky servants who had just so happened to be in the way of his mighty rage. I ignored him. Numbly, I slowly climbed the spiral staircase that led up to Sarah’s bedroom. I had been putting this off all day. I didn’t want to go up there; not now, not ever! Not until we found her, anyways. My hand shook as I turned the door knob, my hands covered in sweat. When I finally opened the door, I stepped into the room, my entire body trembling
The room looked untouched. The bed was a little rumpled up from where Sarah had most likely thrown herself onto it. The window/doors that led out to the balcony were wide open, allowing the soft pink rays of sunlight to filter into the room. My eyes scanned the room, searching for something, anything, that could give me a clue as to where Sarah was. I was about to give up when I saw a neatly-folded blue paper resting on the floor. I quickly picked it up and unfolded it.

To whom it may concern,
She’s mine! You’ll never find her! She’ll probably be dead before you even read this! Sucks for you, huh?
P. M.

I crumpled up the note, burning with rage. I stormed down the stairs and into the throne room. “WHAT DO YOU WANT?!” King Windtwist roared. “I know who took Sarah!” I replied, holding up the note for everyone to see. He snatched it out of my hand and read it quickly, his eyes darting back and forth. When he finished it, his face was ashen gray and tears traced down his cheeks.
“Sarah…no…” he whispered. He collapsed onto the steps leading up to his throne, burying his face in his hands. Everyone was shocked. Here was our King, in such a weak state he looked as if a single gust of his own wind could topple him over. He was weak. He was vulnerable. He was…scared. I went up to him and placed my hand on his shoulder. “Your Majesty, Sarah isn’t dead,” I said. He looked up at me, his eyes red from crying. “How do you know that?” he said hoarsely.
“A kidnapper would write something like that so we wouldn’t go after them. But I know better. Peter didn’t kill Sarah. At least, he hasn’t killed her yet.” King Windtwist seemed to weigh the options; he looked as if a thousand gears were turning in his head. “Artyom, ready my chariot! Get as many soldiers as you can! We need to set out immediately to…” he hesitated. “Where is Peter taking her?” “The Neferlinds. Where else?” I replied. His face paled and he nodded, repeating the command. He rested a hand on my shoulder. “Where did you find this?” he said, giving the note back to me. I swallowed hard. “Sarah’s room,” I whispered. He cringed and nodded. “We’ll find her, your Majesty,” I said, trying to sound reassuring. He nodded. “I hope so, Alex. I hope so."
