Our relationship. It wasn't sonnet inspiring, the story of it won't make thousands want to listen. But it was complicated and it was special to us. It was certainly more than I bargained for from just seeing a boy with a football helmet across the room.

71. Seventy one

I manage to avoid Harry for three days.

I think I'm going to avoid him for the whole trip and I'm looking forward to that but when we go over to Brie and Daniel's for dinner, they tell him to come along too and it's definitely the worst time I've ever had eating spaghetti. It's surreal that he's just there in front of me. He seems like a whole different person to me, there's just absolutely nothing between us. It's more than sufficiently awkward.

"So, Alice, what are you up to in England?" Brie asks me. All the parents are all smiley and I feel like they're trying to force Harry and I back together somehow.

"Uh, not a lot right now." I admit with a little laugh. "I'm just trying to figure out what I want to do."

"That sounds like a great plan." Daniel smiles at me. "You know, make sure you're certain."

"Yeah." I smile at him.

"And Harry, how is college?" my dad asks him.

"It''s good thank you." he says.

There's more forcing Harry and I to talk and the hope in our parents' eyes that we'll talk to each other which eventually fades when they realise we're not going to. But after dinner, they have another idea.

"Oh, Alice." Dad says. "Would you mind going to the shop quickly? We're out of wine."

I frown. "I'm not old enough to buy wine."

"Well take Harry with you."

I raise an eyebrow. "Can't he just go by himself?"

"No no, you both go, you can help each other carry everything. Get some snacks too." Brie hands Harry a twenty dollar note and we both look at each other for the first time all evening before looking away fast.

It's an awkward car journey but then Harry actually says something.

"Sorry if it smells all weird in here, Leigha's always spraying her perfume." he says, eyes on the road, and I can tell what he's doing. It's the whole 'wrongly sent message' thing all over again. I just ignore him but he starts talking again. "So, I guess you're not dating anybody new."

"Harry, shut up."

He frowns at me. "What?"

"I don't want to talk to you, shut up."

"I was just asking if you were dating anybody new which you're clearly not because you're acting so bitter."

I just roll my eyes and keep quiet. I don't want to give into this and be immature but then I get a call from Freddie and can't resist answering.

"Hey." I say happily.

"Hello there. What are you doing?"

"Just in the car with the asshole." I murmur, just loud enough for Harry to hear, and Freddie bursts out laughing.

"Why are you in the car with him?"

"Parents made me." I explain. "Whatever, it's fine. What are you doing?"

"Nothing. Absolutely nothing. When are you back home?" he complains.

"A few more days. Why don't you go out with your friends?"

"Because I can't make out with my friends."

"I mean, you can."

He laughs. "Well, Tyler has always had a special place in my heart."

I laugh too. "Alright, I'm at the store. Call me tomorrow."

"I will. Bye. Have fun with the asshole."

I actually forgot about Harry being there for a minute when I was talking to Freddie so maybe I am really over it. Maybe I was never really in love with Harry, it just felt like it, because he used to be absolutely everything to me and now I could barely care that he's here.
