Hurdles

Our relationship. It wasn't sonnet inspiring, the story of it won't make thousands want to listen. But it was complicated and it was special to us. It was certainly more than I bargained for from just seeing a boy with a football helmet across the room.

45. Forty five

The next morning we wake up at around ten in the morning and we're doing our usual staying in bed and watching videos and talking when I get a Skype call from Harry. I'm kind of excited for this. I know they've spoken before but still, I like seeing them all come together.

"Hey you." I say when the video call starts. He's in bed and it looks like he just woke up. "You're up early."

"I know, I've got early practice today." he smiles.

"Alice, pass us the weed." Jaclyn says from the other side of the screen and I close my eyes. They always do this.

"What?" Harry says, concerned.

"Alice, that guy you hooked up with last night is at the door!" Kylie says and I throw a pillow at her.

"Wait, what?" Harry demands and I laugh.

"They're just being stupid." I assure him and he chuckles.

"Hey guys!" he says happily.

"Hi!" they chorus, crowding around the screen.

"You should have come to England!" Jaclyn says.

"Yes, I know!" he agrees. "But someone didn't invite me."

"Someone has football obligations. And a child for that matter."

"You never even suggested that I come with you!"

"Well you never suggested it either!"

"You guys argue like a married couple, jesus christ." Nicole rolls her eyes and we all laugh.

"Alright, my lovely wife." Harry chuckles. "I've got to go to practice, love you."

"Love you too. Tell the others I say hello!"

"I will." he smiles. "Talk to you later."

When we end the call, all of my friends are smiling the annoying knowing smile they have whenever any of us talk to a boy. I just laugh at them.

"What?"

"You love each other!" Nicole exclaims. "That's just crazy, that you're in love with someone."

I don't think much into it but that night before I go to sleep I see Harry's posted a picture of me on his Instagram. It's a picture he took of me in that hotel in Taylor, the morning before we left. It's just from when we were still in bed and I'm laughing at something he's saying and I remember he was laughing too, taking the picture. He's given it the caption 'I miss this pretty sleepyhead' and that's just a simple little caption that nobody else is going to think about but to me, it's the sweetest thing. It makes me feel like Nicole was right, it is crazy that I'm in love with someone. It's something I've kind of always wanted and thought about and now it's happening, it feels like the best thing in the world.

The next morning at breakfast, the questions from my nan start.

"So, your mum tells me you have a gentleman over in the states." she smiles all knowingly.

I laugh, blushing. "Yeah, I do."

"Have you got a picture?" she asks and I click my phone on, showing her my lock screen. She gasps and then nods approvingly. "What a wonderful looking young man!"

I burst out laughing. "Nan!"

"Well he is dear! You will have to bring him over to meet me. Or bring me over to meet him! I might find myself a gentleman caller whilst I'm over there. The states always seemed such a promising place."

"I think I want to be like you when I'm older." I decide.

"Yes, it would be good for you to loosen up a little." she says wistfully before wandering into the kitchen. I don't know whether that was meant to be a compliment or not but I try and look past it but it pops into my mind again when I'm on another Skype call to Harry that night.

"Hey, am I boring?" I ask and he frowns, laughing too.

"No you're not boring."

"Well am I, like, uptight?" I ask.

"No!" he says, amused. "Where's all this coming from?"

"My nan told me I need to loosen up a little." I frown. "She practically told me I'm more boring than old ladies."

"You're certainly not more boring than old ladies." he smiles. "In fact, you're a lot more exciting than old ladies."

I giggle. "Yeah?"

"Yeah." he smiles still, a little glint in his eye now. "In fact I can tell you some exact places where you're not boring."

"Really?"

"Yes. Some examples include, your bed, my bed, a hotel room in Taylor-"

"And now I have heard things a grandma should never hear." my nan says from my doorway, making me jump.

"Nan!" I exclaim, heat rushing to my cheeks. I look back at my phone and Harry looks mortified.

"Uh, my mom's shouting me." he says hurriedly. "I'm going to go see what she wants."

"Yeah good idea." I say quickly and we both end the call at the same time. I look at Nan and she just smiles at me.

"A hotel room in Taylor?" she raises an eyebrow, nodding. "So you're not so boring after all sweetheart. I'm glad you're using your youth."

And with that she walks away and I don't know whether I'm embarrassed, disturbed or honoured. I mean it might be kind of sad that the highest compliment I can receive about being cool is from my grandma, but it is what it is.
