Hurdles

Our relationship. It wasn't sonnet inspiring, the story of it won't make thousands want to listen. But it was complicated and it was special to us. It was certainly more than I bargained for from just seeing a boy with a football helmet across the room.

11. Eleven

When we're at lunch the next day, my phone rings and I know it's either Nicole, Kylie or Jaclyn because I know they're all together right now and they'll be wanting to talk to Harry again because that's just what they're like. I ignore it and luckily it's on silent so nobody notices when I just turn it over and pretend it's not happening. Or so I think but Harry just smiles at me. I smile back and he keeps on smiling so I frown, confused.

"What?" I ask.

"Nothing." he says innocently and I see his eyes flicker down to my phone for the slightest second and after a moment of silence we both jump, rushing to grab it, but he gets it first.

"Hello?" he says down the phone, grinning as he blocks all my hits. "Jaclyn! Hello! Yes, I believe we did speak on the phone the other night." he pauses as they must be talking back to him. "I'm great thanks, how are you all? Oh, Alice? No no, she's not here. Right! It is so much better talking to me!"

"Stop!" I finally hit his arm and of course it doesn't bother him at all. He just turns to face Dan instead, leaning back against me as if I'm not even there.

"No, I haven't seen her actually." he pretends to stretch, nudging my head as he does. "I mean, I think I should for sure get a flight to England to see you all."

"What's happening?" Dan asks me, looking both amused and confused.

"He's talking to my friends." I say, rolling my eyes. "They talked once over the phone and ganged up against me and it's happening again."

Dan laughs, grabbing the phone out of Harry's hands. "Hello? Hi. Yes, I'm Alice's friend too. I'm the better looking one."

"Tell them I'm the best looking one!" Alex shouts and I raise my eyebrows at him. "What?" he says defensively. "British girls!"

"I'm a British girl!" I exclaim.

"Yeah but you're you." he says and then grins and I pretend to be annoyed.

"And you can get off." I nudge Harry who's still leaning against me, still looking pissed off that Dan took the phone.

"Ow." he complains and I raise my eyebrow at him.

"Don't be a little bitch then!" I say and he looks at me for a moment before bursting out laughing.

"What?" I demand. "I swear, get over it."

"It's not that you swore." he chuckles. "It's just that you're angry."

"It is funny when you're angry." Luke admits.

"I hate all of you." I sulk, sitting back in my chair.

"It's your birthday next week?" Dan exclaims to me out of nowhere. It is my birthday next week I just hadn't thought of telling any of them because I'm not really that excited. I stopped getting excited for birthdays when I was about thirteen, I don't know why, I just never did a lot for them and I'm okay with that.

"Why did you have to tell him?" I call to them down the phone and I hear them all laugh.

"Why don't you want people to know?" Harry frowns.

"There's just no point." I shrug. "I don't want to do anything and now all of you are going to pressure me into having a party so you have an excuse to get drunk."

"Hey, no we're not!" Dan protests. "We can have a party and get drunk whenever we like. We want to have a party because you deserve a party!"

"I deserve like, a card." I say. "A joint card from you all. That's what would make me happy."

"No no, we're having a party." he says.

"Fine, I won't show up."

"Yeah you will." he smiles all smug like he knows best. "You have to. You're too nice to let us plan a party for you and then not show up."

I go to protest but I know he's right so I just stay quiet. I guess a party could be kind of fun, I just don't want to admit to them that they're right just yet. That's the thing about being friends with this particular group of boys, I feel like they make me so much more immature but I guess that's a good thing really. Maybe I do need to relax a little and maybe a birthday party is a good idea.
