I'm bullied because I'm different.
Because I don't have a home.
Because I can't afford good clothes.
Because rude things often just slip out of my mouth.
Oh, and because they're all scared that I'll accidentally kill them with my 'magic powers'.
So maybe I'm not your average teenager, but it's not my fault.
I'd give anything to just be normal and accepted.
Of course, things aren't just going to be that way.
So this is my story.

9. Mystery

"Hey... Wasn't there someone else with us earlier?" I ask, looking around.

"Oh my gosh! We forgot Jenny!" Alice laughs. "She must've gone invisible at some stage and we left her at the beginning of the forest."

As she says this, a slightly dirty Jenny appears in the doorway. "Thanks for forgetting me, guys," she rolls her eyes. "I had to run all the way through the forest to get to the boat before you left."

I feel slightly guilty for leaving Jenny behind, and then I realise that there were only three beds in the room. Were, because there are four. My breath catches and my heart thuds against my chest.

"Uh... Guys... Wasn't there only three beds in here a second ago?" I ask, completely confused.

"No," Alice replies, her eyes seeming slightly glazed over. "There have been four beds the whole time, only one was empty before."

Jenny settled herself on the bunk below Sophie, and smoothed out the green bedcover. Green. I swear that was blue a second ago. I find the air thick coming through my throat. I try to hide it, steadying my breathing.

"I'm going to go onto the deck for some air," I say, rushing out of the room.

I find myself at the front of the boat, whatever that's called, and run my hands along the wooden banister. I close my eyes and focus on the sound of the waves hitting the boat, and the feel of the gentle flow of air around me. Once I'm calm, I open my eyes again and think about the situation.

Oscar and Emily are missing. Possible things that could've happened:

- Oscar kidnapped Emily (but why would he do that? He seemed so trustworthy...)

- Somebody came and took both of them, somehow masking Oscar's thoughts (but they would have to be pretty powerful to mask his thoughts, wouldn't they? I'm not so sure, I'm new to the whole magic thing...)

- Someone took Emily, Oscar was used as a dummy and is actually being taken in the opposite direction (this would be quite logical, but it means we're going in the complete wrong direction)

Most likely option: unfortunately the last one, but then it could just as well have been either of the others.

Next problem.

Something weird is happening on this boat. Possible things that could've happened:

- The boat is magical (this could be true, I'll make a note of asking Elijah)

- Someone is tampering with the boat (but why would they make things easier for us? Perhaps to lull us into a false sense of comfort and then lead us in the wrong direction. Okay, also very possible)

- I'm just overreacting, the room was like that the whole time (I'm sure I wasn't, but maybe I'm so stressed that I'm hallucinating)

Most likely option: I have no idea.

Having sorted out my problems, I feel like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. That is definitely the most cliche thing I've ever said, but I literally feel a lot lighter. It's also nice that I can breathe now without feeling suffocated.

I head down to where Elijah and Will are making out by the wheel to the boat. They're really cute together, but I doubt this is the time to be passionately making out on a boat.

"Uhhh... Guys..." I say awkwardly.

They break apart, clearly startled by my presence. I shift awkwardly.

"Sorry," Will says, breaking the silence, "didn't see you there."

"Yeah... I was just wondering, Elijah, is this boat magical?" I ask.

"Not really," he answers. "It can steer itself and cope under storms and stuff, but other than that the inside doesn't do anything."

"Right," I say slowly. "Look, you might not believe me, but I swear, in the room we were in a second ago there were only three beds, and the sheets were blue. Now there are four, and the sheets are green."

Will and Elijah's eyes glazed over, just like Alice's had. "Guys?" I ask.

They completely ignore me, and a chill rolls through my body. Something strange is definitely happening on this boat, and if I want to get to the bottom of it, it seems like I'll have to investigate alone.
