Matrem. This is my name. I was created to nurture and watch over mankind's greatest treasure during operation cleanup and recolonize. I speak of their children. It hasn’t been long since man abandoned earth, planing to never return. It has been one day, and already with no humans left on earth, I have no purpose. All Matrem robots were left on earth along with all the uncleaned garbage created by man. Many other robots were created and left as well. The most common being wall-e. They are in the process of cleaning earth, a task that would best be accomplished if man were here to to do it himself.

With no children to care for, each Matrem robot has taken up a different task. I have returned to the unoccupied neighborhoods of children I used to care for. If their homes are clean and nontoxic, perhaps my children will return and I can care for them once more. This will be my task. I will restore order to all homes. It is pleasant work and keeps me thinking about man when they were on earth.

I had only been functioning for a few short years when they left. I am older than some, with scratches and dents. But I am younger than many and can go on. When day comes to an end, the world gets dark and I leave the neighborhood and go home. A place I used to stay during nights when the humans were on earth. It is part of the Buy n Large space station. The exterminator bots have already begun their work. They crush and destroy buildings. When they are finished, the wall-e robots follow and pick up whatever is left. They have already started with one of the space stations. As I pass by there is a strange sound. I stop and listen. “Cry of a human baby.” My calm programmer voice identifies. I enter the building, careful not to be seen by the exterminators. The crying grows louder with each step I take. I can feel my circuits humming as I approach the child, anxious to be needed by a human again. The crying is coming from inside the space station’s nursery. Babies were kept here the night before take off. The next morning humans had come to take their babies and board the final ship into space that would take them to the Axiom. Somehow, a child had been left alone in the nursery. I walked up to the crib and peeked over the side at the crying child. “Female, eighteen months old,” my programmer said.

The child stopped crying and looked up at me. I cocked my head and looked her over as my programmer continued speaking. “Hello, I am Metrem. I was created to nurture and protect you.” My eyes shone down on her and the child began to cry again her fascination dying out. The exterminators were making loud noises that must be upsetting her. “Scanning child’s name.” I leaned over the child and scanned the little loose necklace she was wearing. “Hello Abigail,” I lifted the child out of the crib and held her securely. She stopped crying again. “I accept you as my child.” My programmer continued. This was the promise every Metrem made when taking on the responsibility of looking after a new human child. “As your Metrem I will scan your needs,” My blue scanner moved across Abigail’s body. “I see that you need to be changed, fed, and given attention,” my programmer listed. I took the blanket out of Abigail’s crib and wrapped it around her. “I will tend to your needs immediately and help you get to the Axiom.” my programmer informed her. I carried her out of the nursery quietly.

The exterminators are protective of their projects and if anything tries to leave or disturb the building they’re destroying, then they will destroy you as well. I left the nursery and headed away from the cluster of exterminators not too far off. We left the building and walked next to it, heading to the Metrem department. Near us I heard a growl. Looking up I saw an exterminator next to us. I crouched against the wall, waiting for him to move on. Abigail had fallen asleep but the exterminator’s growl woke her and she whined and then started to cry. “Don’t cry Abigail, we are almost home.” My programmer said. I shook my head wishing I could shut it off. Then, above the sound of the exterminators destroying the space station, was a loud roar. The exterminator had spotted us.
