2. Chapter 1

Chapter 1:

Last night I went to sleep early so I as ready for the next day of school. We were going on a field trip to the Bremin Ranges National Park, for me… not anymore, because when I woke the next morning. I was suddenly at the toilet bowl puking my guts up. My dad Aaron had come in to check on me and found me. Turns out I was running a fever and way too many other things I can’t remember.

“Hello, I am calling for a Brian Bates. I need to talk to him about the field trip today?” I faintly heard Mr Bates on the other side of the phone. Dad was in the kitchen where our phone was set up, while I was on the couch with a bucket next to me.

“Hello, Mr Bates. Hi, my names Aaron Perish, Kat’s father… Yes, she actually can’t come today. She’s sick; I found her this morning with her head in the toilet bowl… yeah. I am so sorry about this… uh huh… Yes she was actually quite excited for today. She loves nature, well as much as a Goth can love nature… Okay, sorry for any inconvenience,” with that my dad came back into the lounge and set up my favourite show, Criminal Minds for me.

All day he waited on me. I felt pretty guilty, but I was too sick to do anything myself. At around seven, Aaron received a call.

“Hello Perish household?” I got up and walked into the kitchen so I could see dad. But the look on his face made me not want to. He hung up the phone and sat on a chair around the table.

“Dad, who was that?” I asked, eager for answers no matter how sick I was.

“Kat… the boys you were going to be walking with today, are missing?” it was as if he was asking me to confirm it. I gasped,

“What? How? When?” I couldn’t ask anymore as I ran back to the bathroom and began to puke up guts up again. Dad came in and patted my back.

“You head up to bed and get some sleep.” I nodded and the second I touched my bed. I was asleep.

The next morning when I woke, I was fine. Full on perfectly healthy. I was scared…

“DAD!” I called out. Dad came in instantly, his brown hair ruffled from tossing and turning, and his blue eyes bloodshot, from what looked like lack of sleep.

“What’s wrong Kitty?” I frowned,

“I’m not sick anymore…” I didn’t know what else to say. But it sure freaked the hell out of dad,

“What do you mean?” I shrugged and stood up.

“I don’t know. But I don’t feel sick anymore. It’s freaky.” Dad nodded agreeing with me,

“Okay. Um, if you’re not feeling sick anymore, get ready for school. I’m gonna, go out and help Brian find those boys. I might be home late, so just heat up some left overs okay” I nodded,

“Okay. Just, stay safe out there Dad. If they can go missing, so can you.” He nodded and came over and hugged me.

“I am so, so, so, so, so glad that I still have you.” I smiled and tightened my arms around him, before pushing him away and getting ready for school.

*12 days later*

“WE FOUND THEM! WE FOUND THEM! KATRINA WE FOUND THEM!” was the first thing I heard when my father came home one Saturday. I smiled and ran from my room to meet my dad. Over the last week, Dad had been searching so hard for the boys with Brian. Yes, I am now on a first name basis with my science teacher. Brian had been coming over every night with Dad and were discussing and talking about many different places the boys could possibly be. I was also involved in helping out in the conversations. When I came to I ran to where my dad was,

“Daddy yay!” I screamed as I ran over and hugged him.

“Are they okay?” he nodded.

“Yeah oddly enough, they looked completely fine. But I don’t know if they are medically okay.” I smiled,

“Did they even know who you were?” Dad nodded,

“Yeah, two of them did. Urr, I think it was Felix and Jake.” I smiled even wider,

“Really?!” he nodded,

“Yep, and they want to meet you, so we are heading to Kathy Ferne’s house for a welcome home dinner for Felix. I want to go out and get him a card. But quite frankly I am filthy, so is it okay if I give you some money to go buy a card or something?” I nodded,

“Sure Papa. Does it really matter what kind?” Dad shook his head,

“No sweetheart. But make sure it’s nice one okay?” I nodded and gave him a kiss on the cheek, before running into the kitchen and taking ten dollars from dad’s wallet, and running out the door with my bag on my shoulder and money in my pocket.

As I walked to the shops, I had to pass Felix’s house to get there. I had never been there before and I had only talked to him once, and it was an accident because I bumped into him while he was talking with his friend Ellen. But Ellen and I were friends so she wasn’t mad at me, but Felix was pissed. He scared me when he yelled at me. I just quickly apologised and ran off to hide in the library as usual. I hid from the bullies and people in general in the library. There is only one person I talk to in the library and that’s because he’s different. And his name was Jake Riles. His locker was next to mine and I was one of the only people in the school that knew why he was bully.

But he actually wasn’t a bully. It was just a cover because of his home life. Jake’s mum Sarah was single and was working all the time for her and Jake. His dad Gary was a dead beat loser that doesn’t deserve his son because he doesn’t notice how perfect he is… whoa, okay, just to make things clear. I so don’t have a crush on Jake. Jake was my other friend, I only had Jake and Ellen. Ellen only had me and Felix. And Jake really only had me… sort of.

I shook that out of my head and I realised I had stopped walking in front of Felix’s house. I continued my walk when I realised something. Dad said both Felix and Jake recognised him, but neither of them had actually met my dad, have they? I shook the thought from my head as I bumped into Ellen. Today Ellen was rocking her purple hair extension as always in her light brown hair. Her normally dark make-up was slightly lighter than normal but is still all black, just not as heavy. I smiled at her apologetically,

“Hey Ellen, sorry I wasn’t paying attention.” She shrugged a rare smile on her face.

“So I guess you know the news. They found the boys?!” she nodded and smiled even wider,

“Yeah, I did. I still can’t believe they were gone for two weeks.” I cut her off,

“Twelve days.” She nodded,

“Yeah, that. But still, I can’t believe it. That they were gone and now they’re back.” I nodded,

“Yeah,” then I realised something,

“Ellen. I need your help with something do you mind?” Ellen shrugged,

“What is it?” I frowned and made a face.

“I have to buy a card for Felix, and I don’t really know him to be able to pick a card, and since you’re his best friend, I could really use your help. Do you mind?” Ellen shook her head,

“Not at all,” I smiled at her as we went along.

“Thank you so much for this. It really means a lot.” Ellen shrugged,

“Eh. It’s the least I could do, you’re my friend.” I nodded,

“Still thanks. But then I need to buy another card for another friend.” Ellen smirked,

“What kind of card?” I groaned, throwing my head back,

“Just a card,” Ellen frowned.

“Then who’s the friend?” I groaned.

“ELLEN?!” she smiled,

“What? Just tell me,” I frowned and looked around. We weren’t at the shops yet, but it was in view.

“I um… it’s… for Jake.” I bit my lip waiting for her reaction. When I didn’t get one, I stopped to look at her. Her face was scrunched up in disgust,

“Do you like that boofhead?” I smirked,

“You like the Air head.” I stated and she shut up.

“How do you know that?” I frowned and made a face at her,

“It’s really obvious. But no, I don’t like Jake. He’s just my only friend aside from you. And him being gone, and you being all funny cause both Felix and Sam were gone for you. You didn’t have someone to ogle while they were gone. I was really alone the last twelve days.” Ellen frowned and pulled me into a hug. I was suddenly frozen stiff,

“I am so sorry Kat. I didn’t mean to be so rude.” Not to sound mean. But this girl was like five foot one, and I was at least five foot nine, so her head was sitting in my breasts… awkward. I eventually pushed her off me and relaxed,

“Look, Ellen it is okay, really. You were missing your friend and eye candy. But hey, we’re in town now and I need to buy those cards. So if you wanna help me with Felix’s you can head back over to his house and I’ll see tonight okay?” Ellen nodded,

“Yeah sure,” as we walked into the post office. We quickly picked out Felix’s card and I spent a bit of time picking out Jake’s since I didn’t know him very well. But I ended up picking one that had a cat on the front that said ‘Welcome home’ and ‘I missed you’ on the inside. I didn’t show Ellen what was on the inside, but quickly went up and paid for it, then quickly wrote on Jake’s.

As we left, Ellen and I went our separate ways, she back to Felix’s house and I in the direction of Jake’s house. Once I arrived at Jake’s I was a bit scared, I mean… I have never actually been to his house, or talked to him outside of school. But, to be honest, I missed him while he was gone. He made me smile on my bad days, and kept me safe from the bullies when they came into the library.

It took me a while, but eventually I went up and knocked on the window since the wooden door was open, but there was still screen door. My hand was at the glass when I shook my head and turned away. But I stopped myself and turned back to the door.

When I got to the door again I knocked this time and took a few steps away and stared at the ground. I quickly looked up to see no one at the door yet. I sighed and went and knocked again. This time, I knocked properly. I then stepped away again same as last time.

“Hello? Who’s there? I swear to god if it’s more reporters, get off my property before I call the cops.” My eyes widened at the threatening voice of Sarah Riles.

“Sarah? Sorry, it’s just me Katrina. I was just wondering if Jake was home.” I knew she couldn’t see me so I walked to the door where she could. Sarah’s face changed from mad to apologetic.

“Oh my god, Katrina I am so sorry. We have been getting reporters showing up left and right annoying the hell out of us. And by us I mean Jake and I. But still, come in come in.” she gestured as she held the door open for me inviting me in. I smiled and quickly walked into the passageway.

“So Katrina…” I cut her off.

“Please Sarah, call me Kat. My friends do. I’ve told you this.” Sarah nodded,

“Yes of course. Sorry, Kat. But as I was going to say, I didn’t know you and Jake were friends.” I smiled at her.

“Yeah, not a lot of people do, but eh. It works,” I smiled at her. I could tell she hadn’t been getting much sleep from the look in her eyes.

“Sarah, where’s Jake?” Sarah made an ‘oh’ face and laughed a little. I smiled even more and laughed with her.

“He’s just in his room. Down the hall to the right.” I nodded and started in the direction,

“Thanks Sarah. And you should get some sleep. You have a day off, take advantage of that.” She smiled weakly,

“Thanks Kat, I might just take you up on that. If I’m still asleep when you go I’ll see you at work?” I nodded,

“Uh huh, see ya Sarah.” And with that I walked into the hallway and stood the door that lead to Jake’s room. I frowned, should I really be doing this? I mean, what if he’s just being nice to me because he feels sorry for me. Oh screw it. And with that, I knocked on the bedroom door to Jake Riles, the school bully and my friend.
