11. Venom

In the morning Brian left early to pick Astrid up and gave her a ride to school.  I promised Desiree I’d save them a seat at my lunch table but now I wasn’t quite so keen.  When Christian and Desiree arrived in the parking lot they were driving an incredibly expensive BMW sport car and just like yesterday they were impeccably dressed.  Desiree was wearing a small tan skirt, dark brown knee-high boots and a chocolate button up sweater with a tan tank top beneath and Christian wore dark grey pants, blue sweater and a black blazer.  They both waved and headed for the administration office once Astrid arrived with Brian.

Dulcie and I were standing talking at my locker for only five minutes before Eve and Tilly ran, giggling, up to us.

“Happy birthday, Billie!” They shrieked in unison shoving a gift bag into my arms.

“Thanks, guys.  That’s real sweet.”  Inside was my favourite perfume, Armani Code, and a silver necklace with a beautiful greenish coloured crystal.

“It matches your eyes.” Said Eve.

“Thanks.  Hey, can you help me put it on?” I asked Tilly.

I carefully set my bag on the floor so the glass inside wouldn’t smash and raised my hands to pull my hair out of Tilly’s way.

“You got a tattoo?” Tilly shrieked and Dulcie started coughing.

“Yeah, shh.  Don’t say anything, please.” I said pulling down the sleeve of my grey hoodie.  “Promise me you won’t say anything.” I begged the girls.

“We promise.” They said in unison and crossing their hearts.

“Friends forever?” I asked holding out a pinkie finger for each of them.

“Friends forever.” they chanted hooking their fingers around mine.

“Thanks again, guys.  Okay see you at lunch.”

“Your welcome, Billie.”  The girls said in unison before running off for class.

Dulcie walked alongside me till we came to her class door where she left me to walk to my class alone.  Faith was putting her book bag in her locker when I was passing by and then remembered the elixir in my bag.

“Hey.  My aunt made these,” I said pulling out a perfume bottle from my bag, “she said if we spray it on someone it’ll show us whether their evil or not.”

“How will it show us?” Faith asked conceitedly while she put the bottle in her own bag.

“If their evil their skin will shine, my aunt said, and if their good nothing will happen.” I explained.

“Okay, tell your aunt thanks.” She said before slamming her locker and stalking off.

“Bitch.” I whispered to myself.

“I heard that.” Faith called down the corridor.

“Not like it’s news to you anyway.” I called back and made my way to class.

The morning was long and boring, may be I’d convinced myself into thinking that because I’d had a dramatic change over the weekend I was sure there’d be a change at school too.  But no, nothing had changed except the knowledge that my principal and some other students were in fact vampires.  I wasn’t in class with any of my friends and I was getting incredibly anxious to get out of there.  It all seemed pointless to me now.  I could be at home learning about my powers and how to control them while Riona and Rowanne were still here.

To make matters worse another girl had gone missing.  Mia Willis; 17-years-old.  I didn’t really know her but she was on Dulcie’s cheerleading squad.  She’d gone missing last night when walking home from her boyfriends’ house just two streets from where she lived on Small Street between Baldwin and Jackson Boulevard.  The town was in uproar, two girls, a boy and a school teacher had gone missing in less than a week without a trace.  I’d forgotten all about them, so much had happened over the weekend that it slipped my mind.  Could it be that this new evil, whatever it may be, is responsible for these disappearances?  Riley never mentioned if his siblings found any werewolves in Penn Peaks and I had to wait till lunch to find out.

The queue in the cafeteria was short and Riley was waiting for me at the end.

“Hello.” He said taking my hand.

“Hello, yourself.” I said before giving him a small kiss.  “I have something for you and your brother from my aunt.  I’ll explain later, when it’s not so crowded.”

“I understand.”  He said handing me a tray and filling it up with food.  “Hey, Kyle, could you get my vitamin shake out of the fridge?” Riley asked the man who came to my aid when Dulcie fainted.

Kyle was a tall thin man with sandy brown hair, he had beady blue eyes and a long crooked nose.  Nodding his head slightly he turned and sluggishly walked to the back of the kitchen.  When he returned he placed three clear plastic bottles filled with a greenish liquid on Riley’s tray.

“Your brothers’ and your sisters’ also.”  He said in that accent I wasn’t familiar with.

“Thanks.” Riley said turning from Kyle.

“What is that?” I asked nodding at the bottles.

“We’re part human so we need fruit and vegetables like a normal human would but we aren’t fond of the textures since our kinds are lovers of the flesh.  So instead we blend them and tell everyone they’re vitamin shakes.  Leonard puts them in one of the fridges in the kitchen every morning.” He explained.

“Does Leonard also drink them?”

“He doesn’t have to,” Riley said leading me over to an empty table in the corner of the room, “but he drinks it anyway.”

A few tables down from us were Brian and Astrid.  They were deep in conversation and sat real close to each other which, if they were any closer, Astrid would be in my brothers’ lap.  Desiree was sitting with Tilly and Eve and a few other cheerleaders whilst Christian sat at a table on his own.  All the girls were eyeing him licentiously from their own seats.  When he saw me glancing his way he turned in his chair and waved.

“Please tell me he’s not coming over?” I asked turning my attention to Riley.

“Don’t worry he’s too busy lapping up the attention from every other girl in school.” He said playing with lid on his bottle.

I turned back to Brian’s table to see Astrid playing footsy with him.

“Now I seriously do not approve of that.” I said annoyed.

“What?” Riley asked glancing in the direction I was looking.  “Careful, Bill, she may only be half vamp but her hearing is impeccable.” Riley whispered as Faith and Willem sat down at our table.

“Yeah, I could hear you across the room.” Willem laughed.

“Well, I don’t care what the little tramp hears I’m not going to let her intimidate me.” Faith said crossly.

“Faith, be quiet you don’t want to be sent to anger management again, do you?” Riley warned.

Faith scowled as Riley lifted his vitamin shake to his mouth with Willem and Faith following suit.  Riley slammed his bottle on the table, starting to choke and wretch.  Willem and Faith paused with their bottles at their mouths watching in shock as Riley began to shake and convulse as he choked.

“Riley, what’s wrong?” I asked as he went into some sort of fit.

“V-v-venom.” He stuttered.

I brought both my hands up pulling the bottles from the two frozen vampires’ mouths with my power.

“Get up, Riley, come on.  Move!” I pulled him from his seat.

Willem and Faith were still sitting in shock at the table as I pulled their brother from the canteen.  I remembered him talking about this just a day or two ago, venom otherwise known as werewolf saliva was deadly to any form of vampire.  The only cure was human blood and as I pulled Riley into a cleaners’ closet I ripped the vial of human blood that he kept around his neck and poured it into his gaping mouth.  His eyes closed momentarily and his body stilled as the blood worked its way around his body, disbanding the venom.

“Are you okay?” I asked him as he breathed heavily sitting on the floor.

“I will be.  Just give me a few minutes and go find my uncle.”

“What if someone finds you here?”

“Lock the door and teleport from here into his office.” He said slumping against the wall, clutching his chest.

Locking the door I turned to him “Okay, I’ll be quick.  I promise.” He nodded in response.

I turned away from him and found myself in Leonard’s office, without having to blink.  He was lifting the same bottle filled with green liquid to his mouth when I waved my hand and sent the bottle flying from his clutch.

“Billie, what the hell …”

“It’s poisoned, I think.  Well, Riley’s had venom in his at least …”

“Riley?  Where is he?  Is he alright?” Leonard interrupted my own interruption.

“He’s in a cleaners’ closet close to the canteen.  I gave him the blood that was in the vial around his neck.”

“Take me to him.” Leonard said walking around his desk and taking my hand.

“I can’t teleport you.”

“Why not?” He asked looking down at me.

“I haven’t done it before.”

“Well, have you tried?”

“No.”  Leonard’s piercing grey eyes were blazing down at me.  “I’ll give it a shot.” I said sighing.

Holding onto him I turned once again and was back in the closet with Riley.  Leonard bent over coughing.  “Are you okay?” I asked him.

“Winded, I think.” he said panting before turning his attention to Riley.  “Is it gone?”

“Yeah, it took a lot out of me though.  I think I need to rest before we try to find who did this to me.”

“There was rumour of werewolves in town and tonight is the last night of the full moon cycle for this month.  We will have to go into the Peaks, that’s the most likely place I can think where they’d be hiding.” Leonard spoke no longer panting.

“Shall I take him home?” I offered.

“No, it might not be safe.  The venom may not have killed him but, if they wanted, they could easily finish him off once he’s alone.  No, you’ll stay in the nurse’s office, rest there.”

“It’ll have to be someone at school.” Riley suddenly blurted.  “The shakes were freshly made this morning.”

“Yes, nobody intercepted me on my way to the fridge this morning so I can’t think who it could be.”

“Was there any staff or otherwise in the kitchens when you went in?” I asked.

“No, I am always the first to arrive.”

“What about security cameras?  Do you have any in the kitchen?  Surely that would save a lot of effort instead of hunting someone down.” I reasoned.

“Yes, there are two.  We had them installed due to inane pupils playing pranks and adding a few ingredients of their own to the lunch time meals.” Leonard said his face lighting and then darkening.  “Take Riley to the nurses office and we’ll have a look at the security tapes.  I’ll go find your brother and sister.” Leonard said patting Riley’s shoulder.

Riley slowly got to his feet and stumbled into my arms.

“I’d teleport you too but, considering it winded Leonard, I’d hate for you to suffer more.” I said unlocking the door and practically dragging Riley out with Leonard following us.

“Were Faith and Willem in the canteen?” Leonard asked.

“Yeah, they were in shock and almost drank the shake themselves.” I explained.

“I’ll start there then.  Meet me in my office in five minutes.” Leonard said before heading for the canteen.

Riley and I hobbled along the empty corridor in silence until we were at the end of the corridor where the nurses office was.

“You’re quite strong you know.” Riley said looking down at me.

His face was really pale and I could see a trace of sweat on his forehead.  Panting heavily he stopped moving and leaned against a wall.

“Are you going to be okay?” I asked.

“I don’t know honestly.  That vial, I thought that would be enough blood to take care of it but I honestly don’t know.” He said looking away down the empty corridor.

“Do you need more?”

“May be, may be not.” He said unsure of himself.

Pulling the hem of my neckline to the side I said “Well, take some of mine.”

Riley looked shocked.  “Don’t even joke about that, Billie.” He said completely serious.

“I’m not joking.  You need blood.  Take mine.” I said moving closer to him.

“I could turn.  Remember what I said?  If I were to kill you I could turn into one of them.” Riley said bitterly.

“Well, don’t take enough to kill me.  Just take what you need to heal.”

“I can’t …”

“Yes, you can!” I interrupted him and pulled him into me.

His body was lurched over mine now and I could feel his breathing on my bare neck.

“I want you to don’t you see?” I said looking him straight in the eye.

His canines slowly extended into two sharp points.  I put my hand at the back of his neck and pulled him closer.

“You don’t have to do this.” He whispered into my neck.

I kissed his neck and whispered back, “I want you to, Riley, just bite me.”

Without further ado, Riley bit into my neck.  The sting was only momentarily before he extracted his fangs then begun to suck on my exuding blood.  His hands were on my back and mine were on his neck, I was beginning to feel dizzy when I felt his tongue lick my open wounds when, rather abruptly, I couldn’t feel the pain any more.

He looked me in the eye, I could see something there that I saw once, before Rowanne interrupted us, at midnight on my birthday.  As quick as he had bitten me his lips were on mine and our bodies were entwined.  With our lips locked on each others’ we didn’t notice Nurse Prescott leaving her office.

“If you two don’t mind leaving that behaviour till you’re in the privacy of your own homes I shall not report you to the principal.  Now, Mr Smith, your uncle called to see how you were feeling and when I told him you weren’t here he insisted I come find you as you may be burdening Miss Black.” She finished giving us killer looks.  “If you’ll step into my office, Mr Smith.” She said motioning with her fingers and walking back to her office.

Riley sighed, “Interrupted once more.”

“Just when it was getting good.” I laughed as Riley placed his forehead against mine.

“Can I come to your house tonight?” he asked.

“Aren’t we werewolf hunting?”

“You won’t be doing any such thing and I meant after that can I come over?” He said with a dazzling smile.

We parted with one last kiss.  Riley turned and walked to the nurses office whereas I simply turned and appeared in Leonard’ office.  Willem and Faith, whom were sitting on the opposite side of the desk Leonard sat at, gasped loudly.  There was an old TV and even older VCR sitting in one corner of the room.  Leonard stood drawing down the blinds on the glass panels of his door and placed a tape into the VCR slot.

“This is today’s tape from the kitchen so far.” Leonard said before playing the video.

For the first few minutes we saw nothing and then Leonard appeared, striding through the kitchen with the bottles in his arm.  He placed them in a large silver fridge and then left.  Soon the kitchen staff arrived and were going to and from collecting food from the fridge and preparing lunchtime meals.  More often we had to fast forward the tape because nothing happened.

“Wait rewind it.  We just passed something.” Faith said scanning the TV.

Leonard rewound the tape until Faith indicated when to play.  They guy Riley spoke to at lunch, Kyle, was acting very suspiciously as he approached the big silver fridge as he kept peering over his shoulder.  One at a time he withdrew the Smiths’ bottles and spat in them.  Leonard froze the tape as Kyle spat in the last bottle.
