16. Josephine's Diary

I teleported Dulcie and myself to the outside wall of the parking lot where it was clear of security cameras.  I unlocked the car door and Dulcie slid in as I heard someone from behind call, “Billie?  Billie Josephine Black?”

“Yes?” I turned to see a tall man striding toward me with a package in his hands.

He was somehow familiar.  His brown hair was wiry with a hint of silver just above his ears, his eyes were hazel, his brows were thick and he had the slight beginnings of a beard appearing on his chin.

“You are Billie Black?” he asks, in an English accent crossed with something else.

“Yes.  Is that for me?” I ask, indicating the package.

“Yes, you’re aunt Riona got in touch with me recently and asked me to deliver this.”

“You came all this way from Salem?” I ask, as he hands me the package.

“It was on the way.  My wife and I are going to Manhattan to celebrate our tenth anniversary.”

“Oh, how nice.” I say conversationally.

“I hope that’s helpful to you.” he says, as he starts to turn away.

“Ralph?  Ralph Howell?” I ask, finally remembering him.

Ralph Howell was Rowanne’s father’s brother.  Rowanne hadn’t seen her father since she was five.  Nobody knows why but one day Ulric, Rowanne’s father, just left.  He didn’t divorce Riona and, until then, they were happily married.  Only every now and again did Rowanne see her uncle Ralph but she never saw Ulric again.

“Been a while, hasn’t it?” he smiles.

“Daryna is with you too?” I ask.  Daryna was Ralph’s Ukrainian wife.

“Yeah, she’s right there.” Ralph points to a car not too far away.

Daryna was resting idly on the passenger door.  She had short curly brown hair, olive skin and full cherry coloured lips.  When she saw us gazing in her direction she gave a small wave.

“You can’t see it just now but she’s pregnant.”

“Wow, congratulations.”

“Thanks.” he says beaming.

“Well, I’d love to stay and chat but I’ve got to get my friend to her aunts’ house.  She moves today.”

“Understandably.” he says.  “I hope you’re not having too much trouble getting used to your powers.”

“You know?” I ask stunned.

“Yeah, I’m also here on a favour for Leonard Smith.”

“You know Leonard?”

“Yeah, I’m taking Kyle Reid to Ulric.  He’s in America just now but I think he intends on taking Kyle back to England with him.”

“Is Ulric a werewolf?” I asked.

“Yeah, so are Daryna and myself.”

“Gosh, I didn’t know.”

“Well, Ulric is going to initiate Kyle into our pack and hopefully prepare him for the next full moon.”

“Good luck.  With the baby as well.” I said.  “I’d better go.”

“Yeah, me too.  See you some other time.” He said.

“Yeah, bye.”

I climbed back into the car after waving to Daryna and drove us to Willow Road where we found Laura putting the last of her boxes into a rental van.

“Oh, thank god.  I was beginning to think you weren’t coming!” Laura said as Dulcie ran to her open arms.

“You didn’t really think I would let you leave without saying goodbye first, did you?” Dulcie asked.

“Of course not.”

“I’ll come and visit you in the summer before I go to college.” Dulcie said sniffling into her aunts’ shoulder.

“And you better call me and send me lots of emails.” Laura said all parental like.

“Yes, I will.”

I put the few remaining things on the van for Laura to give her some privacy to say goodbye to her orphan niece.  When they walked down the steps, leading from Laura’s front door, she said to me, “I expect you to take good care of my niece, Billie Black.  I’m her only family and it’s hard for me to leave her.”

“You’re wrong there, Laura.  You don’t have to be blood related to be a part of someone’s family and I can assure you now that Dulcie will always be considered family to me.”

“You’re a good girl, Billie Black.” She said closing the back of the van.

She gave Dulcie one last hug before climbing into the drivers’ seat.  As she rolled the window down she said, “I’ll see you both real soon.”

“How so?” I asked worried.

“Graduation.  I most certainly am not missing that.” She said waving then driving off.

I put my arm around Dulcie and led her back to my Dad’s old Beatle.

“I’m going to miss her.” Dulcie said weeping.

“She’ll be back for Graduation.” I reminded her.

“But what if we don’t stop all this badness before she returns?” Dulcie asked.

“Well, now we have Josephine’s diary.” I said indicating the package in the back seat.  “We’re going to get down to the bottom of this once and for all.

*************************

Josephine’s diary was similar to the Black Craft only smaller in size.  Its pages were filled with spells she had wrote herself and they had to be handled delicately.  Dulcie helped me scan through the pages of descriptions of all the evil creatures she’d fought.  It wasn’t till we were close to the end of the diary that we found something that caught our attention.  A list of people she had been friends with either going missing or turning up dead.  There were several splotchy marks on the pages as if Josephine’s tears had fallen onto the pages.  The culprit she discovered was an ancient evil vampire.  His name was Hugo Moon and she believed that he was the first vampire ever to be created.  It took all of her cleverness and resourcefulness to defeat him especially with the help of other witches.

“Moon.” Dulcie said meeting my gaze.

I flung my arm out and my crystal ball in it’s box came flying to me from across the room.

“Show me Astrid and Desiree.”  I commanded the ball.  “All that they have done and all that they intend to do.”

The surface of the glass rippled, as it had done before, and showed me Desiree hidden outside my house, watching me.  Countless times she had watched the town and it’s citizens until she found me.  She also watched the Smith’s, Dulcie and her aunt.  The glass continued to ripple, I saw her drinking from Eve and dumping her body in the Ponds.

I saw Astrid drinking from Brian, she turned Brian with that bite.  Then in their living room, where they had redecorated it to make it look like some kind of altar, they had Christian chained on a marble table with me tied up at his feet.  All the while they were chanting, then, the chanting ceased and Christian started to scream and writhe on the marble table as some unseen threat took over his body.

I gasped.  “They’re going to resurrect the first vampire!” I said to Dulcie, wrenching my eyes from the crystal ball.

“W-what?” she stammered.

“The ancient evil that Josephine was talking about is the first vampire and Astrid and Desiree are planning on resurrecting him.”

“I’ll get your Nana.”

“No call Riley and have his family come here.  They all need to hear this.”

“Okay, I’ll meet you downstairs.” She said and dashed for the phone.

I strode to the mirror where I knew Josephine would be waiting.

“Am I right?” I asked her when I saw her there.

“Yes.”

“You knew they were planning on sacrificing me?”

“I foresaw it, yes.  But, Billie, you had to figure this out on your own.  There’s only so much I’m allowed to tell you and I’ve guided you as much as I can.”

“Are you leaving me?”

“No, I can never leave you, Billie.  I will always be with you, but as for this affair with Hugo Moon, I can no longer tell you what to do.  I daresay you’re already thinking of spells to thwart him and his followers.”

“Yes, I am actually.”

“Well, then get to it and don’t forget you’ve also got friends and family to help you.”

“I won’t.” I said lugubriously.

*************************************

As I descended the stairs to the living room I found that Riley and his family had already arrived.

“Billie, what’s all this about?” Nana asked.

“This.” I said placing Josephine’s diary on the coffee table.  “Dulcie and I discovered why Desiree and Astrid changed their surname from Hart to Moon.”

“And?” Asked Willem.

“And Hugo Moon is the name of the first vampire ever to be created.”

“So… I don’t understand.  Why are they here?” Leonard asked.

“Josephine, along with the help of other witches, was the one who destroyed him.”

“They’re here for you.”  Riley said catching on.

“It’s not just me though, it’s also about Christian.”

“What about Christian?” Faith chimed in.

“After I read the diary with Dulcie I looked into my crystal ball.”

Leonard stood and started to pace in front of the fireplace.  “What did you see?” he asked.

“I saw Desiree watching all of us for at least the last couple months.  She’s the master mind as far as I can tell; she’s coaxed Astrid into doing as she does.”

“Well, Astrid would do anything Desiree tells her to do, won’t she?  Desiree’s like the mother hen, she’s always taken care of Astrid and Christian.” Faith noted.

“As far as I can see, Desiree is the only one whom has turned so far.  She is responsible for Eve’s death and Astrid is going to try and turn herself as she turns Brian.” Nana gasped.

“We must act soon.” Faith demanded standing up dramatically.

“No, we can’t.  They came prepared.  When Dulcie and I tracked down Miss Berry and the other kids we discovered they were being kept at Desiree’s home.”

“And when Billie tried to teleport us in we got sent flying.” Dulcie said from the corner next to Nana.

“There was some sort of curse on the gates.”

“What a ridiculous thing to attempt.” Leonard spat.  “You march on up unarmed without a clue if they were in or not…”

“Well, it would have been a lot safer had you not dismissed school.” I snapped back.  “I know it wasn’t my spell that gave you words ‘cause what I cast was words of comfort.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Dulcie said stepping between Leonard and I.  “Only Christian returned home.  We don’t know where Astrid and Desiree went to, they could be watching us now for all we know.”

“So what do we do?” Faith asked irascibly.

“We get Brian away from Astrid, for starters, and then we have to find some way to protect Christian also.”

“Protect Christian?” Willem asked.

“Yes, as much as I dislike him, he is a victim too.  They’re going to sacrifice him and use his body as a host to resurrect Hugo Moon’s spirit.”

“You saw that?” Asked Nana.

“Yeah, Christian was chained to some marble table, in their altar, with me chained at the bottom.  Astrid and Desiree were standing near by and they kept on chanting this something.  I could’ve sworn, at one point, their lips said ‘doomed killer’.”

“Doomed killer?” Leonard said reading the paper.

“That would be me aka Josephine.  I am her reincarnation and they plan on sacrificing me so I’m pretty damn sure that makes me the ‘doomed killer’.”

“So what do we do?” Dulcie asked.

“We go about acting as normally as we can until we’re ready to take them on.” I advised.

“What are you going to do?” Nana asked.

“I am going to write some defensive spells and make some protective charms whilst sticking to Brian like glue.”
