8. Homeschooling

“Wow, would you look at that!” I heard the hushed whisper of Rowanne.

“She’ll start showing more of her other powers over the next couple of days.” Nana explained.

I opened my eyes a little and saw Rowanne, Nana and Dulcie standing just inside my door.  But there was something wrong with this picture, they seemed a lot smaller or I was a lot taller but I was still lying flat on my back.  I opened my eyes more fully and looked around me.  Neither of us had grown or shrunk, I was levitating off my bed with covers spilling all around me.  They were all smiling happily when I fell hard against my mattress.  I looked at the window where only a little light was escaping through my curtains and then turned to look at my alarm clock.  It was 5:30, I was lucky if I’d had five hours sleep.

“Why are you waking me so early?” I said whilst holding back a yawn.

“We can’t teach you lessons while your brother is awake and around the house so it’s an early start I’m afraid.” Nana explained.

“But Brian won’t get up till like eleven, can’t you let me sleep in a little?  Please?” I pouted.

“Sorry, dear, you can have a nap later.  Come on, have a shower and get dressed because I’ve made your favourite breakfast.”

“Banana pancakes?” I asked jumping out of bed and grabbing clothes out of drawers.

“With strawberry syrup!” Said Rowanne cheerfully.

With that I blinked; I was in our tiny bathroom and reached for the closet where I grabbed my ivory towels.  My shower was very brief but it was enough to waken me marginally more and the thought of warm banana pancakes smothered in strawberry syrup and a hot coffee made me move a lot faster than I would do at this time on any other morning.  When I’d dried and dressed in my favourite silk lilac blouse and black pants I blinked and arrived at my usual seat at the kitchen table.  Everyone jumped as I appeared in front of them all without any warning.

“You’re lucky you’re brother isn’t here to witness that.” Said Riona.  Everyone in the room laughed light heartedly as Nana placed a stack of banana pancakes in front of me and Dulcie passed the strawberry syrup.  I wolfed down my breakfast and cleaned the dishes whilst Nana and Riona brought books amongst other things from the secret room.

First I had to practice controlling my telekinesis, Nana would throw small balls into the air and I would try to stop them from hitting the floor or hitting me and practised just moving objects around the rooms such as picture frames and candles.  After about an hour of that they had me practising teleportation, they wouldn’t let me teleport upstairs just in case Brian woke up early and saw me appearing in front of him from, apparently, nowhere.  I tried to levitate again but I just couldn’t do it, Nana and Riona told me not to worry about it as they each had to wait almost a week to gain control of their powers.

Riona showed me how to light a candle without using matches which was very interesting.

“Just put your hand close to the candle wick and click your fingers.” She said clicking her thumb and middle fingers then a flame burned brightly on the candle.  “Go ahead and try it.” She said blowing out the candle she had lit.  Still practising with my telekinesis, I used my left hand to make it come off the dining room table where it floated towards me before stopping an inch or two away from my chest.  I raised my right hand and clicked my fingers together.  Not only did the candle in front of me light up but so did the other candles in the living room and in the dining room and with further investigation all the candles throughout the house had been lit.

“Is that normal for your first try?” I asked.

“No, but it’s not unheard of either, dear.” Answered Nana.

“It’s an omen of how powerful you’re going to be.” Riona added.

“Is that bad?” I wondered aloud.

“No, this is very good.” Nana said beaming.  “It’s just a sign to let us know you are going to be very powerful.  It’s only happened a few other times, mostly with the most powerful of witches such as Josephine and your father and…”

“You?” I asked smiling.

“Yes, me too.” She smiled indulgently.  “Now onto spells.”  She said and handed me the spell book named The Black Craft.  “Find something harmless for practise.”  I flicked through the pages and found some intriguing spells and some down right scary spells but I came across one called ‘The Rebirth’ spell.

Curiosity got the better of me and I showed it to Nana, “Nana, what is this spell about?” I asked.

“Ah, this will do I think.” She said scanning the page, gazing down her nose.  “Do you have any belongings, dear, that you hold close to your heart that is broken or faded… ?” She asked.

“I’ve got just the thing.” I said, blinked and appeared in my room.  I lifted a picture in an old silver frame of my parents and, blinking once more, I appeared in the living room next to Nana.  Seeing the bed reminded me of just how tired I was which made me stretch and yawn yearning for my bed.  I sat down on the sofa next to Nana and handed her the framed picture.

“Yes, this’ll do nicely dear.  Now take this in your hands and say the spell aloud.”

She handed me the frame and the book, I scanned the words of the spell once before reading the incantation aloud.  “What once was new, is old and torn, make my wish come true and my desire reborn.”

The frame trembled in my hand and the silver glowed brightly for a second then dimmed, when my eyes adjusted I saw that the cracked frame and faded picture now looked brand new.  The silver was no longer cracked and tarnished and the picture looked like it had just been captured recently.  “Wow!”

The laughter in the room died as the clock chimed eleven and movement upstairs could be heard.  I had lost track of the time and now, that Brian was up, everyone was running around returning all the books and everything else they had taken from the secret room.

Once the coast was clear I went to the kitchen to make some breakfast for Brian and bumped into Dulcie.  She had been leaning against the door and was shaking like a leaf.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine it’s just all these emotions all at once it’s a lot to handle.” She said collapsing into a chair.  “You know you’ve been going through so much this morning from anticipation to fear to excitement and then you all went mad with panic when you heard Brian getting up it’s kind of like being hit with tidal wave after tidal wave of emotions, you know?”  She said breathlessly.

“Why don’t you go lie down on your bed for a while and I’ll bring you up some Camomile tea, okay?”

“Yeah, thanks Bill.” She said attempting to make a smile and headed upstairs.

I proceeded to brew her tea and pulled out some cereal and a bowl for Brian and popped some bread in the toaster.  When I went upstairs to Dulcie’s bedroom she was lying flat on her back but her arms and legs were splayed out as if she had just star jumped onto the bed.  She was sleeping already so I left her cup beside her bed on a set of drawers and pulled the blanket fleece hanging off the end of her bed over her to keep her warm and closed her curtains so the light wouldn’t disturb her.

When I came back downstairs Brian was sitting at the kitchen table munching on his cereal and toast.  I was beginning to wish I had just decided to crash on my bed or even on the sofa because I was beginning to feel the waves of sleepiness take hold of me once more.

“Hey, sis, can you take me to that little car show room later?  I’ve been working weekends at a car wash lately and saved some money for a car of my own.  Will you give me a ride?” Brian asked as I gripped hold of a chair to keep myself upright.  “What kind of car did you have in mind?” I said just to make conversation.

“I don’t know yet, as long as it runs and isn’t a complete piece of crap I don’t care.” He said laughing.

“Okay, Brian, I’ll take you in an hour two but I’m kind of beat I think I need a lie down.” I said and without much further ado I passed out.  I thought I had teleported because when I woke up I was lying on the dining room floor.  I heard a sharp in take of breath and looked around me, Nana, Riona and Rowanne were looking from me to the kitchen.  When I stood up, I moved to see what they were staring at, but then Riona pushed me away from the door and put her finger to her mouth to keep me quiet.  I could hear Brian frantically shouting at someone in the kitchen.  When I tried to move towards the door once more I felt dizzy and passed out again only to wake up in the kitchen once more.

“Are you alright?” Brian asked anxiously.

“Yeah, I think so.”

“Here.” Brian lifted me up into his arms and carried me to the couch.  “You rest, Bill, you’re looking a little paler than normal.”

“What happened to you, Brian?” It was a question that had been sitting on my mind since Brian had arrived but not something I would dare ask aloud.  May be it was the drowsiness that made me ask but something was definitely up with my brother.  Brian was a sweet little kid when my parents were alive but when they died he had a complete personality transplant and became a selfish, immature little brat.  What could’ve happened to make him change into such a responsible young adult?  “You’re so grown up.” I said aloud.

Brian smiled, “You were expecting Precious Prince Brian?” he asked.  The name I’d given him when I myself acted immaturely because my other grandmother had taken to him and not me.  “I think we’ve both been doing a lot of growing up lately, Bill.” He said kissing my forehead and placing a blanket over me.  He plopped down on the floor in front of me and switched on the TV before putting the volume down low.

It didn’t take long for me to figure out what just happened, I hadn’t fainted or teleported.  I had astral projected.  Another power that I would have to learn to control and soon.  I wouldn’t want to pass out in class and appear next to the teacher’s desk.  I’m sure that would bring about the Witch Hunts once more.
