The Silver Assassin

LIfe as the most notorious assassin in Endasia is quite easy, until the day that Alexa is hunted down by her last victims brother. Will she escape the clutches of the Elven Prince? Or will she accept the hand fate dealt her?

2. Ebony; Alexa's POV

I make it to the Arch of Aether by nightfall, the overly large moon reflected in the water that surrounds the hexagon.  I walk around the six arches till I come across one mark with words written in elvish. All who enter are welcome. I scoff.

There was a time when I was only fluent with two languages, the common tongue of Endasia, and Belfish, my native tongue. But I am now fluent in every language known to Endasia, even the dead ones. It comes in handy with my business.

I crack my neck from side to side before stepping across the water and into the arch. I hate traveling by Laygates.

The world around me starts to spin, and I can't seem to walk straight, always off balance. When I reach the otherside, ElfHaven, I put a hand over my stomach, doubling over. Luckily, I hold my lunch in, and straighten with a headache, which worsens when the noise of the nighttime market reaches my ears. At night, ElfHavens market is dangerous, and most choose to avoid it, but I find it quite amusing.

I step over the clear blue water of the Hexagon, almost stepping on a mermaids tail in the process.  She glares at me, and bares her fangs before turning back to her customer with a flirtatious smile, preparing to con him out of every cent he has.

I shake my head and turn down a less busy street, taking lefts and rights before I stand before my destination. I smile at the small store and push the door open with a jingle.

“Ebony?” I dodge a flying book and walk over to the glass counter. “Ebony? Where are you?”

“Alexandrea? Is that you dear?” I laugh, following her voice into a back room.

“Who else would it be? I can’t remember the last time I saw a customer in here.” She lets out a throaty laugh and hobbles from her place at a worn table to hug me.

“Its good to see you, my dear. How have you been?”

I take a seat and she pours me a cup of boiling tea.  “I’ve been,... Okay.” I pick through my pack until i come across some dried feverfew leaves. “I’ve been to Belfast.”

She looks up with a raised eyebrow. “And?”

“Its horrible. Its nothing of its former beauty. The queen has driven it into poverty.” She nods, and I began to crumple the leaves into my tea.

“You could change that, you know.” Ebony says in a whisper.

I look up at her sharply, she's treading on dangerous ground. “Well I’m not going to do that. So stop telling me that everytime I come here.” I tip back the cup, burning my tongue has the scalding liquid courses down my throat.

“Well, I have to try-”

“No.” I glare at her. “No you don’t. You can just let me live my life the way I want to live it.” She gazes at me a moment before nodding.

“Of course, I’ll respect your decisions, whether I agree with with them or not.”

I give a terse nod. “Thank you.” I pick at the mess of colorful threads of a bracelet on my wrist, a habit I have when I have to much energy boiling up inside me.

A tight silence falls around us, and it's a few minutes before Ebony speaks again.

“There's been word going around that the Crown Prince is close to finding you, he even has an award out for any useful information on you.” I stare at her in confusion.

“Why would he be hunting me? What have I done to him? Sure I killed Crown Prince Destal,  but that was years ago.”

“You killed his other brother. Crown Prince Rathal, heir to the throne before you killed him at a pegasus race.”

A smile breaks out across my face. “Oh yeah! I forgot about that. Crystal helped me on that one! I should visit her soon.” I say the last part more to myself.

“Alexandrea, the Prince is not one to underestimate. He could easily track you down.” I let out a laugh.

“Ebony, thousands have hunted me, and no one has even gotten close. Heck, no one has even found out I’m a girl!”

“Someday, your cockiness is going to get you killed.” She shakes her head as I smirk.

“Didn't you hear? I’m.the most famous assassin in Endasia.”

She shakes her head at me. “But that doesn't mean you can't die.”

I shrug. "I don't plan on dying at the hands of some petty prince, Ebony."

"But you just might."

I frown. "You've seen me fight, and you've heard of what I do, and yet you still doubt me?" Hurt blooms in my chest. Ebony is like a mother to me, she knows how powerful I am, and yet she still thinks I could die at the hands of the ElfHaven prince. I get to my feet, suddenly, I don't feel like visiting.

Ebony stands as well, eyes pleading. "Alexandrea, please, don't act like this! I've know the royal family since the king was a boy. I've seen his children grow up, and I've seen the warriors they've become. Please don't do something reckless because of your pride!"

I give her a small smile. "I'll see you later, Ebony." I start to walk away.

"What are you going to do, Alexandrea?"

Without glancing back,  I respond. "I'm going to kill the last Crown Prince."
