7. Setting Sail

Doug's POV:

I ran as fast as I could without hurting myself. The wind whipped around us all, tearing at our hair and clothes. I looked around; it seemed as if all of Auradon was asleep. Not a single window had a light in it. Evie was running ahead of me, her blue hair billowing in the wind. A determined look was etched on her face and her feet were a blur. I quickened my pace so I could somewhat catch up with the rest of the group. A wave of pain erupted in my ribs and I bit back a scream. Evie glanced at me and noticed my discomfort. "Guys, slow down! Doug can't keep up!" she said, slowing down herself. The others, especially Chad, grumbled in complaint, but they slowed to a jog. I sighed. Did I always have to be the weak link?

"We're almost there, Doug. You can make it," Evie said, giving me a caring smile. I knew she had meant well, but honestly, she had made me feel worse. Jay gestured for us to quiet down. I was about to snap back when I realized why. We had reached the part of the barrier Evie had mentioned; the part that was heavily guarded. All but one of the guards was slumped over, snoring. The guard was short and stout, wearing a gold and blue uniform. He kept nodding off, his head beginning to droop. Then he suddenly snap back to attention, shaking himself.  A rowboat rested in the water, bobbing up and down on the waves. We all crouched down behind a group of bushes.

"How are we supposed to get past that guy?" Carlos hissed, his eyes narrowed. Chad smirked, standing up. "leave this to me," he said. He walked towards the guard, waving. "Why hello, my good sir. Lovely weather we're having, isn't it?" The guard said nothing. Chad looked uneasy. "My friends and I need to get to the Isle. Is there any way...?" "Beat it, kid. Go home," the guard sighed, hefting his musket. "But..." "I said, beat it!" the guard snapped. losing his cool. Chad whimpered and ran back. Jay rolled his eyes at him. "Sure you've got it. When pigs fly!" he chortled. Chad's face turned bright red, but he held his tongue. I took a deep breath and started to crawl towards one of the sleeping guards that was closer to the bushes.

"Doug, get back here!" Chad said. I ignored him and grabbed the guard's musket. The guard that was awake spotted me and he rushed forward, the butt of his musket lowered. I squeezed my eyes shut and swung my gun as hard as I could. I heard a loud thwack and the guard crumpled to the ground. My bad wrist throbbed and I rubbed it, wincing. I turned to the others. They all stared at me, their mouths hanging open. "What?" I asked, smiling. Jay grinned and gave me a high-five. He and Carlos got in the boat and started moving the stuff around so we could all sit in it. Mal gave me a thumbs up and followed them. Chad still had a look of disbelief as he climbed into the rowboat. Evie came up to me and hugged me gently.

"Nice job! That will show Chad," she giggled, grinning. I smiled widely. I helped her down into the rowboat and then sat down beside her. Carlos sat across from me, glaring at me. I gulped. Jay and Chad began to row and we moved slowly but surely towards the Isle. Mal gazed out onto the water. "What if we can't help Ben? What if he's..." she choked back a sob and put her head in her hands. I immediately felt guilty. In all of the commotion and excitement, I'd forgotten that since Mal was Ben's girlfriend, she would be taking this a lot harder than the rest of us. I tried to give her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Mal. Ben will be fine, I promise." She sniffed and looked at me. "You think so?" she asked hopefully. "I nodded. "I know so," I said. Mal smiled. "Thanks, Doug," she said. I smiled back.
