3. Chapter III - Thomas' Perspective - Part One - The Capture

Day one of the expedition. The team camped out in the long grass so we could hunt immediately. Crouching down, the men peered over and spotted a hyena's den.

The alpha male had just gone out to hunt.

No one made a sound. Then a rustling of grass was heard, and the alpha male lifted his head and sniffed. Benjamin, one of the chaps, rested his gun on his knee and pointed it towards the hyena. The creature turned its head. Ready.....Aim...Fire!!!! A deafening sound of the bullet rose in the grass. It flew across to the alpha males chest. He tried to run, but it was too late. With one little whimper heard, the great canine fell to the ground.A rouse of cheers came from the men. "Excellent shot, old boy!" and "Jolly good, sir!" But was focused on the den.

The whole pack came out into the open, sniffing and whimpering to see if there was any life left in their leader.

When they realized he was truly gone, they sat and bayed, even though there was no moon, perhaps a mourning call.  But there was something even more interesting.

Last to come out of the den, was a girl. An African girl, crawling on all fours, like them.

She was wearing absolutely no coverings, and wasn't the least bit embarrassed. Her thick, black hair had grown long, and was in terrible tangles. Her teeth, pointy, and she bared them like those creatures. She sat in the hot sand and bayed with the pack. Then she went to rub heads with perhaps the Alpha male's former mate.

But, like us humans in mourning, she shed a quiet tear. This girl had human emotions.

I knew at that moment, of course, I had to bring her home to my house and family in New York, to teach her our ways.

But how?
