9. Chapter 9

We hop onto the train with Four leading us, "As Dauntless we fight to protect every life inside the fence without fail. That's why we train you the way we do, to teach you not to give up, and to find out who has what it takes" he tells us. We jump off the train and jog over to the fence, we climb up the stair until we get to the top. "I know it's been quiet out there for a few years, but that could change at any moment. So we have to be ready for everything" Four informs us as we look out, beyond where the Amity faction are farming. "What's out there?" Tris asks, "Monsters" Christina suggests, "Amity folks" Al points out. "No. Beyond that" I say, "Places that never recovered from the war" Will says. "Do you know?" I ask Four as I turn to him, he looks at me before looking back out to the horizon, "Let's just say they built the fence for a reason" he tells me.

We travel back to Dauntless where we train with throwing knives. I throw three knives and they all land in the chest of the target, "You're kind of good at this" Tris says from beside me. I turn to the left to see Al throw a knife that doesn't even make the target, "Well that was pathetic" Eric comments, "It slipped" Al tells him. "Well go get it!" Eric tells Al, "What...while they'er throwing?" Al asks. "Are you afraid?" Eric questions him, "Of being stabbed by an airborne knife? Yeah" Al tells Eric, "Everybody stop!" Eric shouts and everybody does so. "Stand in front of the target" Eric tells Al and he does, "Four, give me a hand here. You're going to stand there while he throws those knives. And if I see you flinch, you're out" Eric informs Al, "One thing you will learn here is that orders are not optional" Eric tells us. I watch as Four selects four knives and stands next to me, looking at Al as he gets ready to throw. "Stop!" I cry out, "Anyone can stand in front of a target, it doesn't prove anything" Tris answers, "Then it should be easy for you to take his place" Eric tells her. Tris goes to move but I grab her hand, she looks at me and I step forward. I walk over to Al and push him out of the way, I fold my hands behind my back, "Same rules apply" Eric tells me. I take a nervous breath before looking into the eyes of Four, he throws his first knife and it hits the target next to my hip, "Oh, come on, Four" Eric says. He throws his second knife and it lands beside my head, I still don't take my eyes off him, "You can get closer than that" Eric tells him. "You want me to give her a little trim?" Four asks him without looking away from me, "Yeah, maybe just a little of the top" Eric suggests. He throws his third knife and it lands on the target just above my head, he throws his last knife which lands right next to my ear. I could feel a slight stinging feeling, I move my head away and touch the top of my ear to see blood, "Points for bravery, Stiff. But not as many you just lost for opening your mouth" Eric says, I look up from my fingers to Four, to see he hasn't looked away from me. "You watch yourself. We train soldiers not rebels. Alright, we're done for today, get out" Eric tells us, I take a deep breath before following after everyone. "You alright?" Four asks me, "You cut me" I point out, "I meant to" he tells me. I stop walking and turn to him, "You meant to?" I question. He walks up to me and turn my head so he could see the cut, "You think he was gonna let you off without a scratch? You's still be standing there if I hadn't hit you" he tells me, I move away from his hands. "So am I supposed to thank you?" I ask him, "You're supposed to be smart. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have" he says and walks off.

I return to the quarters and everyone cheers for me as I enter, "There she is? You do have a death wish" Chris tells me, "You alright?" Tris asks me and I nod my head. "I can't believe you did that" Will says, "Thanks Evie" Al says and I give him a hug. "Look at your ear" Edward points out, "Come on, let's get you cleaned up" Tris tells me. "Hey, Evie. That was cool" Molly says to me, "Thanks" I say, even though I still haven't forgiven her for beating up my sister. "Impressive, Stiff. Congrats" Peter says as he approaches, "Shut up" Will tells him. "What? Hey, you're famous now. I mean not because of the thing with Eric, you're in the news. Yeah, listen" he tells me, "The recent transfers, Beatrice, Evelyn and Caleb Prior, children of Andrew Prior, call into question the soundness of Abnegation's teachings and values. What prompted them to leave?" Peter reads. Tris turns from him and I follow suit, "Perhaps the answer lies in the corrupted ideal of an entire faction. Their theft of resources, their general incompetence, the abuse of their children" Peter continues to read as we try to ignore him. "Did they beat you guys, like Marcus Eaton's kid?" he asks, "They didn't beat anyone. They're good people" I hiss at him. "Right. And that's why you left?" he questions, I push him out of the way and leave the quarters, "Is it something I said?" I hear Peter ask.
