6. Chapter 6

Four led us down a spiral staircase, and to a brightly lit room. Where music was playing and the Dauntless are gathered having fun, I watch from above as people watch two guys fight, kids running around freely, and people mucking around. "This is the Pit, the center of life here in Dauntless" Four tells us. He now leads us to our sleeping quarters, where beds are pushed against the wall and together. "You're gonna be sleeping here for the next ten weeks" Four informs us, "Girls or boys?" a guy asks, "Both" Four answers. "If you like this you're gonna love the bathroom" he says and leads us to it. Everything was open, no privacy at all. "Great" I whisper, "Are you kidding me?" Christian asks. "You should fell right at home, Candor. Everything out in the open" Four says as he starts to walk off, I move to get out of the way but he still bumps into my shoulder. "Get change" he orders, "Great. Shower anyone?" Peter, who I learnt was that guy that mocked us asks.

We all get new uniforms to change into. I wiggle into the black jeans while still wearing my skirt, once I did the jeans up I took off my skirt. Taking a quick glance around, I quickly take off my shirt and place the new black tank top on, and a black leather jacket over the top. I undo my bun and tie my hair in a messy pony tail. Once everyone has changed, we grab our old faction clothes and dump them into a fire. We were then led to the Pit where everyone is eating, "Where shall we sit?" Beatrice asks Christina and I. I look around the room to see the only free seats are available on Four's table, "Come on" Christina says and we walk over to there. They both quickly sit down, making the only last spot next to Four, I sit down next to him and look at the food that was in front of us. "Have you never seen a hamburger before?" Christina asks as I pick a hamburger up with my fork, "No, we...we've seen one, we just have never eaten one" Tris tells her. "In Abnegation you plant food, plant based dirt without sauce and minimum seasoning" a guy that sat across from us says, "Which text book did you swallow?" I ask him and he laughs. "Nice too meet you too. I'm Will. Erudite" he introduces himself, "Of course you are" I mumble. "No offense, but I'm surprised Abnegation even eats at all. Too selfish, right? No wonder you left" Christina says to Tris and I, "You gotta be pretty self confident to be friends with a Candor" Will says, "What is that supposed to mean?" Christina asks him. "You have no filter. You say the first thing that comes into your head" Will says, "Like you're an idiot?" the guy next to Will adds in and we all laugh. "Nice one, Al. Well, at least we tell the truth" Christina says, "Erudite can tell the truth cause we have the facts" Will argues, "I don't wanna hear about your old factions. You're Dauntless now" Four speaks up. "Were you a transfer too or Dauntless born?" I ask him before taking a sip of my drink, "Are you kidding?" he questions, "No" I tell him. "What makes you think you can talk to me?" Four asks me, "It...must be because you're so approachable" I tell him and carry on eating. "Tough one" I hear him mumble before turning to talk to another Dauntless person, "You, my friend, have a death wish" Christina tells me, "You know he was first in his class. They tried to recruit him for leadership twice, but he said no" Will informs us. A buzzer goes off and everyone starts to bang their cups on the tables, it quietens down as the leader of Dauntless stands above us. "Initiates, stand" he orders and we do so, "You have chosen to join the warrior faction tasked with the defense of this city and all its inhabitants. We believe in ordinary acts of bravery and the courage that rises one person to stand up for another. Respect that. Do us proud" he says and walks off. The crowd cheers and claps before four guys come over to me and pick me up, we get pass around by them. I grab hold of my sister's hand as I go past her and laugh at how free I felt.

I get waken up by a banging sound, I sit up to see Four stand before us, "I want everyone in the Pit. Two minutes" he tells us and leaves. I quickly get dress into the Dauntless uniform and jog with the other initiates to the Pit. "There are two stages of training. The first is physical, push your bodies to the breaking point and master the methods of combat. The second is mental, again breaking point, you'll face your worst dears and conquer them unless they get you first. You'll be trained separately from the Dauntless born, but you'll be ranked together. After initiations rankings will determine what jobs you move into. Leadership, guarding the fence, or keeping the factions from killing each other" Four informs us, "The rankings will also determine who gets cut" Eric adds in. "Cut?" I question, "At the end of each stage of training, the lowest ranking initiates will be leaving us" Eric says. "To do what?" Al asks, "There's no going home to your families, so you'd be factionless" Eric answers. "Why didn't we know that?" I ask, "It's a new rule" Four tells us. "A new rule? Somebody should have told us" Christina says, "Why? Would you have chosen differently? Or out of fear? Well if that's the case, you might as well get out now. If you're really one of us it won't matter to you that you might fail. Now you chose us, now we get to choose you" Eric says.
