21. Chapter 21

I hide behind a wall as I watch Erudite control the Dauntless faction, I look to the left to see Four tied to chair. I quickly walk over to him, "Hi" I say to him. I grab my knife out and start to cut at the rope tying his hands, once his hands were untied he hit my knife out of my hands and pushes me backwards into the wall. "Four. Four. Four, it's me. You're in a sim" I tell him, suddenly Jeanine and a few Erudite members walk in. "He can't hear you. Amazing, isn't it? Everything we think of what makes up a person, thoughts, emotions, history, all wiped away by chemistry" Jeanine tells me, "Four" I call his name again. "Hes gone. And we're all safer for it" she informs me, "Safer? How are we safer?" I question her. "The brilliance of the faction system is the conformity of the faction removes the threat of anyone exercising their independent will" she tells me as she comes closer to me, "Don't get me wrong, there's a certain beauty in resistance. It defines the categorization. It's a beauty we can't afford" Jeanine says and walks off. I watch as an Erudite member goes to the computer to instruct Four and I slowly walk over to Four. "Four, it's me. It's me" I whisper to him as I touch his face, "Please, look at me" I tell him. He grabs my throat and walks me backwards into the wall, I hit on his arm but he throws me again into the wall. I step on his leg and swing myself over him, making him flip over. I get up but he grabs the back of my jacket, throwing my in the chair that he once sat on. I rolled off it and got to my feet, he takes a swing at me and I duck under, coming up and hitting him in the stomach. I block his attacks and put him in a head lock, "Four, it's me!" I tell him but he hits me on the back, making me lose my grip. He gets out of the head lock and throws me over his shoulder, making me land on the ground behind him. Four throws a punch down but I block it, I raise my leg up and knee him in the head, I roll to my feet and get in my stance as he comes at me. I duck and dodge his swings until I find my chance and take a swing at his jaw, it connects with it and he staggers back. He goes to hit me again but I grab his arm and twist, I go to knee him in the face but he grabs my leg and lifts me up before driving me into the ground. I crawl backwards from him and grab my gun, pointing it at him, "Four, stop! Stop! Stop. Please" I tell him as I lay on my back as he stands above me. At the last second I turn the gun around and point it at my own head, Four kneels down and grabs its. "It's okay. I love you" I whisper to him, I watch as he starts to fight against the serum. "Four, look at me" I tell him as I hold his face in my hands, "It's me. It's me. It's Evie" I inform him. I watch as Four blinks a couple of times, "Evie" he whispers my name and I smile as he slightly moves the gun away from my head. I look behind me as the Erudite members aim their guns at us, "Go" I tell him and he starts to shoot them. I pick up my knife and kick a guy away from me, he goes to pull his gun out but I duck down and slice him across the leg, he falls down and I knee him in the face. I pick his gun up and fire at the Erudite members, as soon as it runs out of bullets I throw it at someone's face. I watch from a far as Jeanine tries to finish the process of Dauntless killing all of the Abnegation members, I run forward to stop her but get tackled from behind. I flip the guy over me and punch him in the face. I quickly stand up and twirl the knife in my hand before throwing it at Jeanine, I watch as it sails across the room and pierces Jeanine's hand on the board. I walk up to her and she winces in pain, "Shut it down" I tell her, "No" she says. I watch on the monitors as the Dauntless continue to kill the Abnegation members, I catch a glimpse of Christine before pulling the knife out and holding it to Jeanine's throat. "I will not ask you again. Do it! Shut it down!" I tell her, "I admire you're willing to die for what you believe in, but so am I" she tells me and I hesitate, "Can't do it, can you?" she asks. I look around in desperation when I notices a vial of serum on the floor, I glance at Four who nods his head at my plan before looking back at Jeanine. I push her away from me, "Maybe you're not quite as Dauntless as you thought you were" Jeanine says, "You're right. I'm not" I tell her. I turn and catch the injection that Four throws at me, "I'm Divergent" I tell her and inject her with the serum into Jeanine's neck. "Now, shut it down and wipe the program" I order her. I watch as Jeanine shuts down the program and the Dauntless members become conscious looking confused, I smile at Four at how many lives we just saved. I glance to Jeanine as she looks around in panic, "Don't get me wrong. There's a certain beauty to your resistance" I tell her. She grabs and needle and runs at me, I block her attack and punch her in the face, making her go unconscious. "Evie" Four calls my name and I look over his shoulder to see Dauntless members coming for us on the monitors, "We gotta go. Now" he tells me.

We leave the control room and meet up with the others, "Tobias" Marcus greets his son and Four looks at him coldly, "We need to keep moving" Four informs them. Four, Tris, Marcus, Caleb, Peter and I leave the Dauntless building. We sprint after the moving train, Four and Peter were the first to jump on. I help Caleb on before helping Tris on, I keep running as I train speeds up. "I got it!" I shout to Four, "I know you do" he says and picks me up, helping me onto the train.

I was sitting on the edge of the train, looking out as we flew past trees, when I felt someone sit down behind me. I know it was Four as he slipped his arms around my waist and moves me into his chest. "My mum and dad died today. They're gone" I tell Four, "I know. But they loved you, Evie. For them there was no better why to show you" he says. "We have nothing. We have no home, no faction. I don't even know who I am anymore" I inform him, "I know exactly who you are" Four tells me. I pull away slightly and look at him, "Are you sure about that?" I ask him, "Yeah, I'm sure" he says. I smile faintly at him, "Come here" Four says and moves me back against his chest, and I rest my head against his shoulder. We're like the factionless now, we've left everything behind. But we found ourselves, and each other. Tomorrow we may have to fight again, but for now we'll ride the train to the end of the line. And then...we'll jump.
