14. Chapter 14

I run into the Pit where I see my friends, sister, Four and Peter all waiting. I walk closer to them but slam into a visible wall, I push my hands against it as I find myself trapped behind it. I watch as Peter whispers something to Christina and Tris making them both laugh while looking at me, I look down to see myself trapped in a tank that is filling up with water. "Hey! Help me!" I shout as I bang my fist on the glass and as the water rises up to my waist, I lift my leg up and slam my boot against the glass but it doesn't break. I take a last breath of air before the water fills the whole tank up, I stare at my reflection in the glass, "This isn't real" I say. I tap the glass with my finger and it cracks, I do it a couple more times as I watch the crack get bigger and bigger. Suddenly the glass breaks and I snap out of the simulation. "How did you do that?" Four asks me, "What?" I question. "How did you break the glass?" he asks again, "I don't know, I just did" I tell him. "You just did it?" he questions while looking at me with suspicion, "What were your test results? Your aptitude test?" Four asks. "Abnegation" I lie to him, "I don't think so" he says and sits down next to me, "What?" I ask him. "I think you're lying to me" he points out, "Why...why would I lie to you?" I ask him. He leans forward, making me lean back other wise our noses would of been touching. "I'm going to ask you one more time. What were your test results?" he asks again, "Abnegation" I firmly tell him. He leans back in disappointment and stands up, "Fine, you're free to go" he tells me. I get up and walk over to the door, "Evie" he calls my name and I turn back to him. "Just so you know, Dauntless don't break the glass like that" Four informs me, 'Shit. He's getting an idea' I think to myself as I exit the room.

I enter the tattoo parlor again and go over to Tori, "Tell me what you know about Divergents" I say and she leads me into the back room. "My brother, he was like you. During the second stage he got good really fast. Last day of the simulations one of the Dauntless leaders come in to watch him. The next morning we found his body at the bottom of the chasm. They got rid of him" Tori informs me. "Who did?" I ask her, "Dauntless leadership. You can't let them find out about you" she tells me. "And what if they already know?" I question, "Then you're already dead" she says. My eyes widen and I was about to say to her that I think Four knows when she gets called out to the front, "Good luck" Tori tells me and leaves me to my thoughts.

I grab my jacket and push open the back doors of the parlor, I jog to the tracks and jump onto the train and ride it all the way to Erudite. I walk through Erudite and watch as everyone gave me looks and got out of my way, they keep doing this until I get to the main building of Erudite. "Caleb" I call out my brother's name and he walks over to me, "Evelyn" he greets me as we embrace. "What are you doing here?" he asks me, "I'm in trouble" I inform him as we let go of each other. Caleb grabs my arm and leads me to a quiet corner, "What happened?" he asks. "I'm not gonna make it in Dauntless. Beatrice can, but I can't. I don't fit in there" I tell him, "You have to fit in there" he simply says, "I can't" I repeat. "I'm...I'm...I'm just, I'm not like them" I say, "Who is? They're crazy" Caleb says. "Maybe I can go back to Abnegation" I suggest, "You can't go back" he reminds me. "I know, but..." I was saying but Caleb interrupts me, "They're never gonna let you do that" he says, "Who?" I question. "Erudite. They're not gonna let Abnegation break anymore rules" Caleb tells me, "They actually think that they're running the government now?" I ask him, "They might be soon" he says with a shrug of his shoulders. "Really?" I question, "Erudite should be in charge. Certainly not Abnegation" he says, "Wait, Caleb. How can you say that?" I ask him. "It's what all the other factions want, now that Abnegation failed" he says, "No. That's just what they're telling you" I tell him, "It's true" he says. "It's not true. It's not. There are liars here, these people who know how to manipulate you. You need to understand that" I inform him, "Evelyn. I think you should go" Caleb tells me. Tears start to pool in my eyes, "Faction before blood, yeah?" I ask him and he doesn't answer. I look down at our feet as my tears fall down my face, "Got it" I say and walk off.

As I was leaving the Erudite building, I'm stopped by two Erudite officials. "I need you to come with me" one of them tells me, I ignore them and go to walk past them. The guy grabs my shoulder and I elbow him in the face, the second officials charges at me but before I could hit him someone yells out 'Stop.' I turn around to see Jeanine, "Are you alright?" she asks me, "Yeah, I'm fine" I tell her. She leads me to her office where I take a seat, "Thank you" I say to the assistant as she serves us tea. "I'm glad you came here today" Jeanine tells me, "You are?" I ask her. "Are you happy with your new faction?" she questions, "Yeah" I tell her. "But you came to see your brother" she points out, "I just...I just wanted to talk to him" I say. "Have you see your parents?" Jeanine asks, "No" I admit to her. "It's hard to let go. Faction before blood. It's an important ideal, but sometimes difficult to fulfill. It goes against our fundamental human nature. But that's exactly the weakness we need to over come" Jeanine informs me, "You think that human nature's weakness?" I question. "I think human nature is the enemy. It's human nature to keep secrets, lie, steal, and I want to eradicate that. That's how we'll maintain a stable peaceful society. You would help me with that wouldn't you?" Jeanine asks me, "How would I help you?" I ask. "You're aware that Abnegation is undermining the faction system, they're breaking laws, harboring Divergents?" she questions, "No, I didn't know that. But if that's true, then I'm glad I left" I say. "See I need to know that I can count on you to enforce the law, even if it's been broken by someone close to you, someone you care about" she tells me, "Of course" I say, "Good. Then I'll have my car take you back to Dauntless" Jeanine tells me.
