Eliza took the photo from the envelope and looked at it. Jimmy was standing on an iceberg with a red parker on and his climbing boots on. He flashed a beaming smile as if it were meant for her. Tomorrow she would go out and but a picture frame.

Jimmy went on to tell her how his colleague had met a girl and was now in New Zealand with her and would be there until the storm cleared. Thoughts started going through her head like what if Jimmy were to meet another girl out there; she would surely lose him. Eliza sat at her table and wrote another lengthy letter to Jimmy then put it in her bag to post during her lunch break.

There were no more letters that week and Eliza was thinking the worst; she asked Patricia if she had heard from Jimmy. She replied no have you?

“Not since Monday. Patricia smiled then told her that there I only one collection per week so you may get a letter posted say dated Wednesday on Saturday as airmail is strange sometimes. Do not worry though Eliza, Jimmy is going nowhere. He loves his work and I think he is in love with you also.

“Do you think so?

“I know Jimmy and he wouldn’t go to the trouble of writing to you every day if he didn’t love you.

“I love him so much that it hurts; and when I do not hear from him then I feel sad.

“I know; when I was at University and I met Michael all the girls were after him because of his good looks but he only had eyes for me.”

“I never worry about Michael now because I know that after all these years he still loves me and I love him.”

“Can I slip out and post him this letter?

“Of course; and you can post mine too if you don’t mind.”

When the Saturday came Eliza was helping her mother in the kitchen her mother was preparing a Ghanaian salad with prawns. Whilst Eliza cooked smoked black bream, with couscous sliced tomato and a chilli sauce; the main course there would be marinated chicken and rice mixed with sweet peppers and sweet corn and peas.  For desert there would be a mixture of mango, pineapple, and summer berries topped with vanilla cream.

When Michael and Patricia arrived they were welcomed by Akan and Efie.

“We brought wine said Patricia as Eliza introduced Michael and Pat to her family.

Efie and Patricia were getting on well but Akan was very serious when talking to Michael and when the subject of Jimmy came up Michael got all defensive.

Jimmy has been through a lot in his life Mr Badoe more than most men of his age.

“I know about your son Mr Connors you see I did some checking.

Then you will know that his real parents were both killed in a gas explosion not far from here and that we adopted Jimmy after he was being abused in a foster home.

“Yes I know all about your son I even know that he killed a 400lb black bear.

“Yes and saved the lives of three people one of which was his best friend Sydney Ahomet a Ghanaian.
