Martyn and Jimmy carried on with their research after bringing in the supplies.

Martyn had to set away another balloon to check the weather forecast over the next few days. Jimmy and Martyn set off in an inflatable dingy to check the ice flow further out. They took samples of the ice and water to take back and analyse. Jimmy recorded the sightings of two walruses; a pod of Narwhal’s and seven humped backed whales. They stayed away from the shoreline where there was a glacier four hundred yards to the left of them was a small iceberg. They knew that underneath there might be ice forty or even fifty feet down. Jimmy caught a few cod with his lure. Then they headed back the way they had come. Tomorrow Martyn wanted to explore the other side of Ross Island he knew there was some forest closer in and they could collect logs for the wood burning stove.

Jimmy was looking forward to doing some hunting.

Jeff felt totally at ease with a woman for the first time in his life as the two of them chatted all the way back to Wellington.

Jennifer had her station wagon parked at the airport and after checking in to tell them that she had made the drop and Jeff got through customs they were on their way.

“I live not far from the ground and my uncle is a big rugby fan and used to take me when I was just a little nipper not that I’m very tall now.”

Where is you live Jennifer; look can I call you Jenny?

“I like that said Jennifer; and I live in Bolton Street.”

“Do you live alone Jenny?

“Yes; I moved out of my parent’s house about two years now; and you?

“I’m still at home and its hell; I can tell you.”

“I can guess they give every girl you meet the third degree.

“How did you know that?

“My parents are exactly the same.”

Again Jeff thought that they had so much in common; he really liked this girl even though she was only five feet tall. Jennifer had dark hair and an olive coloured skin she was very pretty he thought as she turned to look at him she had dimples in her chin when she smiled. “Tell me I bet you are an only child?

“Yes I am, my mother had a difficult birth; I weighed fourteen pounds said Jeff laughing.”

“I was prematurely born that is how I’m so small. My father is six feet two but not as muscular as you are. I was an only child too.”

They pulled into Bolton Street where she lived and stopped outside her house.

Jeff took her bag from the back along with his then removed his boots before going inside.

“Make yourself at home Jeff; I am just going to the bathroom.”

Jeff took off his parker coat and hung it up and removed the thick woollen sweater he had on too.

“Jenny Came back wearing a pair of jeans and a tea shirt.”
