After dinner Jimmy went to his room and sat down to write yet another letter to Eliza since they had got to Antarctica he told her everything they had been doing since their arrival.

He wrote to tell her what he had seen today with the killer whales.

The snow had turned into a blizzard now and Jimmy couldn’t see a thing out of the triple glazed window as he continued to write about the wilderness he was surrounded by. Jimmy told her about the penguins and the seals and the mosaic of ice patterns on the ocean. Then he went on to tell her that he missed her smile and how he couldn’t wait to see her again. He asked for her to send him a photo so he could look at it and not feel alone. The five page letter was put into an envelope and sealed, dated and had a return address on the back. Jimmy placed it with the others ready for the air mail service on Friday.

Jimmy then filled in his record chart before getting into his sleeping bag.

Jeff and Martyn filled in there chart out too; Jeff wrote to his mother and father telling them that he’d arrived safely; He found it hard to write and barely filled a page. His relationship with his parents was strained. They found it hard to express their feelings towards him and in turn so did he. Jeff craved a loving relationship with someone; someone who would teach him the meaning of real love.

He was certainly capable of it he thought. He had had several girlfriends but lacked the communicative skills to make the relationships work. He bought several books even Relationships for Dummies but as of yet he hadn’t been able to try his newly acquired skills out. Jeff had no problem talking with men so was it women that he felt intimidated by. Living at home with his parents didn’t help as they gave all the women that he brought home the third degree. They told him that they felt like they were being interviewed for a job but only worse. Martyn on the other hand had no problem getting women into his bed but he just could not commit himself to a meaningful relationship. When women started coming on too strong he was looking for a way out.

At thirty five his parents thought it was time he was settling down. They told him that they wanted Grand Children and that they weren’t getting any younger.

Martyn didn’t want to feel pressured into getting married just to please his parents.

He jumped at the chance when this job came up so he could escape; somewhere where he could be free to make his own choices and decisions. He thought six months out in the wilderness would sort his head out and that he could find out more about himself and who he really wanted to be.

Both men got into their sleeping bags and hoped that tomorrow would bring some kind change in their miserable lives.
