Waiting at the terminal building was Sydney in his car the army were waiting to take the nurses to The Grand Hyatt Hotel that had managed to stay intact during the quake.

The emergency services had already got to work evacuating people to Brunei and Sabah whilst the clear up was going on. A headquarters was set up for people so that they could come and get information about missing family members. A telephone hotline was also set up and manned by over thirty army personnel. Many buildings had been destroyed and fires raged throughout the city. The fire and rescue services from around the world had been dealing with the situation for two days now.

The main concern was panic and looting which was now taking place because of the lack of food and water.

A lot of water was being used to put out the fires.

Some people were so desperate for food and water that they were re-entering buidings that could collapse at any time.

The emergency service and mountain rescue team from Nepal were used to locate people trapped under ground. They had saved many lives with their efforts; progress was slow and the longer it took to search every home; time was running out for others who were trapped. Over 9.000 bodies had been recovered so far and it was estimated that the figure could be close to 14.000 by the time the whole city was searched then made safe.

Mass funerals were being held all over Kuala Lumpur; they had to lay the bodies onto a massive funeral pyre by the hundreds. The risk of typhus was a problem for the medical staff; that was being stretched to the absolute limit.

Sydney embraced his mother then Pat and Sylvia before opening the door for them and driving them to the hotel so they could change first but Michael demanded that Sydney drive them straight to the hospital in Penang.

Sydney looked like he hadn’t slept since the quake; his clothes were badly in need of washing and they could smell the sweat from his body. It took them forty minutes to drive to Penang. Once they got there Michael ordered Sydney to shower and to take some clean clothes from his case and change; then to lie on one of the spare beds and sleep for a couple of hours. Sydney protested until Michael asked who was in charge.

“You are Doctor Connors; I’m sorry. Sydney put his hands together and bowed then took the case from Michael, where he looked for a room where he could shower and change. Michael introduced himself to the staff; then introduced his wife and Sydney’s mother who was put to work in the dispensary she would be in charge of five other young girls so they could keep things moving.

Michael ensured that the theatre was scrubbed out and disinfected and every piece of equipment sterilised before usage.

Shortly after; Ralph Mason showed up with the other two doctors Glen Peters and Colin Moses. Could you two assess the situation on the wards; prioritise who needs surgery. Then send them to me.

“Yes Sir.
