All the oil for the lamps and heaters would be dropped by ski plane. All meat and fish would be caught so Jimmy brought his rifle and plenty of slugs. In another large rucksack Jimmy packed a sleeping bag, two spare blankets, a

dozen towels, six hand towels, and six bath towels; toothpaste, a razor, and enough blades to last the journey and shaving soap.

Jimmy checked and rechecked the list before finally lying on his bed and getting a couple of hours sleep.

When Jimmy awoke it was two thirty in the afternoon; he popped the kettle on to make himself a cup of coffee before the lads came to pick him up.

Jeff Sharp was a research analyst; the other man who was in charge of us was called Martyn Devlin the thirty year old had been out to the Scott- Amundsen station many times over a ten year period he was a meteorologist who collected data and then sent it back to Durham University where they collated all the data he sent them; to see if there had been any climate changes. If the ice flow was melting then this would indicate that the ozone layer surrounding the earth was heating up and the melting ice could be catastrophic. Jimmy loaded up the van when it came.

He rang his mother to tell her that he was on his way and gave her the address so she could give it to Sydney if he returned.

All aboard the skylark said Jeff who was driving them to Leeds/ Bradford Airport. Their flight was at five o’clock and it would take some two days to reach. They had to refuel in New Zealand then fly by light aircraft to Antarctica.

They boarded the Hercules aircraft and awaited clearance to take off.

Martyn Devlin was happy once the plane took off and he knew they were on there way. He settled back in his seat and went to sleep and advised Jeff and jimmy to do the same. Jimmy wasn’t tired he’d slept for a few hours before the lads came for him so he picked up a book that he’d bought on Antarctica and was swotting up on the wild life that they would encounter. He read over two hundred pages whilst the lads were sleeping.

He unscrewed the top off his flask and in seconds both men woke up.

“Is that coffee I smell Jimmy.”

“Two sugars in mine shouted Jeff.

Have you got another cup; there’s only two here.

Jeff hunted in his rucksack until he found a plastic mug; then handed it to Jimmy who poured out the black coffee then added milk and sugar before handing it to his colleague then repeated the procedure for Martyn and himself.

“Where do you think we are now asked Jeff?

“Just over Italy now I think.”
