Harry and Michael took out the metal plates and cutlery and the fish was shared out four ways.

Harry and Michael both agreed that the steelhead salmon was beautiful when they were finished the scraps were burnt on the fire and the plates and cutlery washed.

They sat around the fire on collapsible chairs drink cans of shandy then the two boys took a battery operated lamp into the tent and read for an hour before getting inside their sleeping bags. Harry and Michael finished off another bottle of whisky that had been opened last night before retiring. Michael threw more wood on the fire before climbing inside the tent.

The sounds of the night were amplified by the stillness of the night as they heard owls and other predators moving around. Sydney was used to sleeping in the forest with his father but Jimmy could not sleep. Then around three thirty in the morning he clearly heard a scream from further down the river. He instinctively got up and took his Grandad’s rifle with him Sydney wasn’t far behind him as they ran to where the screams were coming from.

By the time Harry and Michael got out of the tent Jimmy had reached the tent to find two young girls terrified.

“It was a bear it came outside our tent just now.

Has it gone then?

Just then a black shape came out of the woods and was bounding towards his friend Sydney. Jimmy quickly cocked the rifle then took aim just behind the bears head.

He breathed out. The bear was on its hind legs as Jimmy fired. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion as Jimmy reloaded and fired again within five seconds the bear fell at the feet of his friend. Jimmy dropped the rifle and ran towards Sydney who was standing in shock.

Michael and his father in-law ran towards the boys’ the girls now came out of their tent they saw the bear lying dead; they were only about eighteen years old. They had left food that they had eaten lying around instead of hanging it up out of the way.

Michael and Harry gave the girls a right talking to for leaving food lying around.

“Do you realise you both could have been killed.

“They both were crying hysterically now and couldn’t thank Jimmy enough.

“Alright; alright please calm down said Doctor Connors. He took the girls back to his car where he gave them both a sedative.

What are we going to do with the bear; said Jimmy.”

“I don’t know son; we cannot leave it there. There are mountain lions that can smell blood and may come down here.

“My father always said; never kill an animal unless you are going to eat it.

“Wait until we get the girls sorted first Jimmy; they can sleep in our tent and we will stay in the car.
