The sun was just going down when Jimmy got an enormous bite and the line peeled off the reel.

“My God Jimmy’s into a steelhead Salmon; take it easy now Jimmy son; let him run

Everyone put down their rods to watch Jimmy play the monster fish as it jumped clean out of the water trying to shake the lure from its mouth. “That has got to be thirty pounds. More like thirty five the fish zoomed along for his second run. Again Jimmy was patient he wound the line only when the fish came in closer. It took over twenty minutes but eventually the fish was netted. It was the biggest fish that Jimmy had ever caught. It weighed forty two pounds and two ounces.

“That is the biggest fish I’ve seen caught on this lake and I’ve fished here for over thirty years.

He took out a browning camera and took pictures of Jimmy with the salmon.

“Harry showed his grandson how to fillet a fish. They cleaned them all then brought them ashore.

“Jimmy, Sydney, can you go and collect some wood; we need a lot of it to keep the fire going throughout the night. Have you got some rope granddad?

“Why do you need rope?

“Well my father and I would go collect wood from the beach that was washed up we tied all the wood together to make a bundle. It made it easier to carry.

“Clever lad; here Harry passed him a small coil of climbing rope from the car and the two boys set off along the water’s edge then found only a few pieces of wood so decided to go inland a bit.

They were collecting the wood from inside the wood when they heard a noise

“Did you hear that?

“Yes said Jimmy what was it?

“I don’t know but I’m not waiting to find out come on. Jimmy quickly tied up the bundle of wood then the two boys headed back.

“You did good boys, here bring it over here and we can get a fire started.

Jimmy brought over the wood then used the small chopping axe and began breaking some of the wood into small pieces to make a fire.

Jimmy then used his scout knife that his father had bought him when he was just seven years old. He cut shavings from the piece of wood and took the Zippo lighter and set the fire away.

Once the kindling had caught and was burning he added more wood until the fire was ablaze. Jimmy then made skewers from some of the straighter pieces of wood and wooden frame with two V shapes cut into them and then he threaded the filleted pieces of salmon through the skewers and then sat the lot on the V shaped frame over the fire.

“Where did you learn that son?

“I read it in a book somewhere.”
