At five that afternoon Harry and Michael got the barbecue going whilst Pat and her mother put out the salad. They laid a white patterned with blue flowered table cloth over the red wood table then set out plates. They made homemade slaw and potato salad. Harry had invited the neighbours who all brought beer and pecan pie.

Harry put on some music and everyone got up to dance.

Jimmy looked after the barbecue turning the steaks and sausages whilst Sydney turned some chickens on the spit.

“Make sure and put plenty of that home made barbecue sauce on those steaks Jimmy shouted his granddad. He swung his wife around to “Glen Miller’s in the mood; they both moved around like a pair of teenagers. The evening was one to remember because Pat had never seen her parents so happy for a long time. It seemed as if Jimmy had made them feel young again and had made their lives complete.

By eleven thirty the boys’ were exhausted and they said good night and Jimmy kissed both his new grand parents and his mother and father before he and Sydney went to bed.

“Got to be up early in the morning mind we are going fishing.”

“We are Granddad; oh great!

Pat her mother and the Johnson’s from over the road, helped clear up before Pat and her mum washed the dishes and stored them away.”

Michael, Harry, and Bernie Johnson were enjoying the bottle of whiskey that Michael had bought them on Jimmy’s behalf.

The men talked into the early hours before Bernie made a hasty retreat home.

“Time we hit the hay too son, said Harry.

“See you in the morning dad, goodnight.”

Michael climbed wearily up the stairs to the bedroom where his wife was already sleeping he undressed and slid under the covers. He lay on his back for a while thinking to himself how much joy Jimmy had brought into their lives.

He smiled as he turned over and was asleep in seconds.
