Winds whistled against the bedroom window of the Connors house in Bellevue Gosforth Jimmy stretched then got out of bed and went to the toilet in the bathroom.

Even though he had lived their over a month since his adoption due to the fact both his parents had been killed in a gas explosion at Trinity Street in North Shields, when an elderly lady who lived upstairs accidentally left her newly installed cooker on through the night. She was not familiar with the new appliance and when she lit up her clay pipe in bed, the house blew. Jimmy had spent several weeks in Preston Hospital after breaking his left arm and leg and dislocating his shoulder. He also had to have 9 stitches put into a head wound. The Welfare Authorities placed him in care because his father’s cousin Geordie Patterson could not look after him and both his aunt and uncle were both elderly. His Aunt Sarah was disabled to boot and that was another reason that his aunt could not look after him. They were the only family that Jimmy Connors Hepple had.

Michael Connors a consultant surgeon and his wife Patricia had grown so fond of the child they decided to adopt Jimmy when it was discovered that the woman who was supposed to be looking after him had in fact abused him and so had the other children in her care.

Jimmy was starting a new school today at Gosforth Junior School. Pat made sure that Jimmy had a new school uniform and a leather satchel.

Jimmy wasn’t used to wearing brand new clothes as his parents made the best of the money they had by buying second hand clothes for him when his father was out of work after being demobbed after WW2. He eventually went back to his old job as a carpenter but when the business was later sold he got into a fight with the new boss and was sacked.

George Hepple ended up working at Smiths Dock Ship repair yard in the little town; where he prospered under his new boss Bob Hall a man with a big girth and a kind heart. He made George a foreman of the yard because of his kindness. George brought him a pheasant, rabbits, and fish from his Cousin Geordie’s fish store.
