It was nine o’clock on Monday morning May 21st 1961 Jimmy Connor’s Hepple sat his first Maths examination. Everyone sat at their desks waiting to be told to begin.

Jimmy had brought two pencils in case one of them broke during the exam.

Mr Curtis spoke; it is now nine fifteen, you have two hours to complete the examination. Anyone found cheating will be disqualified and they may be expelled from this establishment.

“You can begin.”

Jimmy turned over his paper then put his arm around it so the person sitting next to him couldn’t copy his answers.

The exams would take place all week until they were completed. He wouldn’t get his results until the end of term.

At the end of the week it was just the RE examination to do and he sailed through it in less than forty five minutes. The teacher look at him as he handed in his paper at the teacher’s desk then sat back in his seat. Mr Thomas Cottingham looked at Jimmy’s answers and smiled.

In the lunch break both Sydney and Jimmy discussed their exams that day. They were having ham salad with beetroot and pickled onions. For pudding it was chocolate sponge and custard.

They chatted away and Jimmy told his friend that he would be going to Canada to meet his adoptive mother’s parents.

“Where do they live Jimmy?

“In Toronto I think.”

“How long will it take?

“About 34 hours from Heathrow airport we are driving to London at four in the morning then we get there at nine o’clock and our flight is at eleven. Mam says there are loads of shops in the airport so I won’t get bored.

“Are you going anywhere this year Sydney?

“No My father has a three year contract in Seoul in South Korea so I will be at home.

“How long are you going to Canada for?

“Four weeks mam says.”

“What am I going to do for four weeks Jimmy; you are my only friend in the world.”

“I’m sorry Sydney; It will pass over quickly I’m sure.”

“I will miss you.”

“And I you; but it wont be forever.”

That evening Jimmy asked his parents if Jimmy could come with him to Canada.

“Sydney isn’t going anywhere mam; he’s going to be on his own. Can he mam please?

“They both looked at each other then said I don’t see why not but we will have to ask Jimmy’s mother and father first.

“Oh please ring her and ask now mam will you.
