The New Tynesiders - Little Town - Book 2

"The New Tynesiders" follows the story of Akan Badoe; a Ghanaian immigrant who comes to settle in the North East along with many other ethnic groups. His struggle for acceptance in a racially bigoted Britain are documented. The story also follows young Jimmy Connors Hepple the boy from the "Little Town" story who is adopted by an eminent surgeon and his wife after a tragic accident where both his parents are killed in a gas explosion.
Jimmy meets Sydney a young black boy and they become friends. Jimmy the adventurer wants to work in the Arctic like his hero Sir Robert Falcon Scott. Sydney a doctor. The story takes you on a journey through the boys childhood into adulthood where colour, creed,or religion have no boundaries. The New Tynesiders will take you back from 1948- 1966.

“Twenty five years you say Mr Kelly; can I ask you again in those twenty five years how many times have you visited the people of North Shields in their homes?

Paul Kelly was looking decidedly shaky his voice was quivering.

“I cannot rightly say Mr Badoe.”

“Well again Sir I do because I’ve taken the time to visit every home in every street in North Shields Tynemouth and Whitley Bay.

“I’m sorry but I do not have the time to visit every home.

“Well I noticed that come election time every home in Tynemouth and Whitley Bay are visited by you and your party members; but here in North Shields not once in twenty five years have you been around.

“I think come the election Mr Kelly, I would be looking for another job.”

The room erupted into applause as Akan sat back down.”

“Well you will have the opportunity to stand as councillor for North Shields in May Mr Badoe let us see if you can make a difference.

“I cannot do any worse than you Sir; said Akan as the room erupted into laughter.

Paul Kelly got up from his seat and left the room.


Everyone gathered around Akan Badoe and asked him if he would stand as the next Labour councillor For North Shields. Over the next few months Akan gave speeches in Northumberland Square and the support was overwhelming.

When Election Day came around every member of North Shields old enough to vote voted in favour of Akan Badoe; there were votes from Whitley bay and Tynemouth too.

It was a landslide victory for Akan who was dually elected as the next councillor.

On the following Saturday Akan and his family Stood in Northumberland Square and thanked everyone for voting, he then went to Tynemouth Priory and Whitley Bay promenade to thank them too. Akan promised that he would hold a forum in each town once a month and that if anyone needed help they could send in a letter that would be dealt with as soon as he could.
