“You’re very quiet back there you two, is something wrong?

“No answered Jimmy sharply.”

“Pat said nothing more but she knew something was troubling the boy.”

“Sydney thanked Mrs Connors and Jimmy and told him he would see him tomorrow at school.”

“Jimmy nodded then turned away as the car pulled away.

“There was an uneasy silence in the car on the way back home and Jimmy who would normally help get the things out of the boot left Pat it to do it all herself.”

After unpacking Jimmy’s clothes that he’d worn for church that morning she placed the fish into the freezer after individually wrapping them.

Jimmy was sitting on his bed reading when his mother came into the room and sat on his bed.

“You can talk to me about anything you know Jimmy; I will listen. Is it something I have done?

“No mam; it is not you?

Then what is it darling? I know you I think, something is troubling you.”

“You know that girl who was at Sydney’s party?

“Which one said Pat smiling?

“Eliza Badoe; well she was meant to meet me and Sydney to go fishing today and she didn’t come.”

“Oh I see now said Pat. Well maybe she had to do something for her parents Jimmy and was unable to come?

“She was in Church mam, I saw her.”

“There must be a simple explanation son so don’t worry about it; now have you eaten anything I’m making roast pork for dinner tonight for when your father gets in.

With roast potatoes and carrots?

“Yes and a Yorkshire pudding that I know you like too.

“That’s nice. Geordie gave me a pound so I could buy some chips from the fish and chip shop. Tanya who I know gave us a fish cake each too for nothing and I bought two cans of shandy.

“You and you’re shandy; you will end up full of gas.”

“Now you go wash up and change out of those clothes and I will pour you a glass of milk and some bourbon biscuits.

“Thanks mam; I will be down in a minute.”

Later that evening Pat told her husband that Jimmy had interest in a girl.

“Already he’s only eleven?

“Nearly twelve darling; now I think we should have a special birthday party for him being that it’s his first birthday in this house.

“Yes I agree what are we to buy him?

“Well you could start by asking him Michael.”
