The Dolphin was packed with people drinking and some were sitting outside in the sun.

Jimmy put his hold all down then sat on the steps. He handed Sydney the parcel of chips and they opened the news paper and the smell emanated from the fried contents; something that stays with you all of your life little pieces of batter dropped into the water below then and the sprats gathered in the hundreds fighting over the morsels.

It didn’t take the seagulls long either. They hovered overhead waiting in case some thing dropped from the newspaper wrapping where they would swoop and pick them up and then be chased by the others as they tried to seize the morsels from the gull who had managed to get the chip that had fallen into the sea.

When Jimmy and Sydney had eaten their fill they emptied the contents over the side where there was another mass panic by the birds until there was nothing left.

They rolled up the newspaper then put it into the rubbish bin that was on the wall in front of them.

Jimmy took out the hand lines and passed one to his friend. The green coloured twine had a lead weight attached then there was a metal boom attached to both and some ten pound cat gut. At the end of each was tied some small hooks they baited each hook then lowered the boom into the water their legs dangled over the edge as they held the line in between their index fingers and gently lifted the line with it until they could feel the sprats biting on the bait then they tugged until they could feel the fish struggling to get away. Quickly they would haul up the line and remove the small sprats.

My mother loves these said Sydney as he dispatched the fish and placed them into the carrier bag. After twenty minutes they had about twenty five fish. Jimmy had caught three decent sized coal fish weighing two pounds each and a plaice. All the small fish were returned after that but Sydney did catch another plaice and a coal fish which they kept.

It was four o’clock when Jimmy’s mother drove up in the car as the boys’ were drinking the shandy from the cans.

“Well have you caught many said Pat?

“Yes we’ve caught a few said Jimmy do you want to see them. Sydney opened the bag to show Mrs Connor’s the catch.

“Wow you have been busy haven’t you?

“We had more but we put them back mam; good said Pat let’s get you both home then.

Pat tied up the bag then placed it into the boot.

“We have got to call into Geordie Patterson’s mam he has some fish for you.

After the boys’ had put away their fishing lines they got into the car and drove to Geordie Patterson’s store where he picked up the fish parcel.
