When the service was over Jimmy went to the vestry and changed into his playing out clothes; he folded his good clothes and put them into the canvas hold all that his mother had given him there was a spare compartment where he had placed his hand lines one for him and one for Sydney.

He rushed out then met Sydney outside. Jimmy said goodbye to the vicar who thanked him for coming then off they went down the bank and onto the fish quay.

The familiar smells hit his nostrils and the sound of the seagulls s they walked along the quayside until they came to Geordie Patterson’s store.

Hi there Jimmy lad; said Geordie when he saw him. You’ve grown since I saw you last. How are you settling in with the doctor and his wife?

They are very nice Geordie.

“Good; now who is this little whipper snapper then?

“This is my friend Sydney Ahomet; he lives beside me and goes to the same school.

“What brings you down here then?

“We are going fishing Geordie along on the steps of the pier.

“You will need some bait then wont you?

“Do you have any?

“Yes give me a tick and I will cut you up a few mackerel.”

When Geordie returned he gave him the parcel with the mackerel that he had neatly cut up for them to use.

“Right there you go and here there’s a pound for you. Get your friend some chips and a bottle of lemonade from the “Chippy” along the road.”

“Thank’s Geordie.”

“Come back later and I will put up a fry for you to take home.”

“Jimmy waved as they left; Geordie waved back feeling guilty for not being able to look after the boy after his parents were killed.

“Come on we will get our chips now said Jimmy as they passed Gilbergs then associated fisheries; next door was the “Chippy where Tanya Cramman was serving.

“Hello Jimmy I haven’t seen you down here in a while?

“I live in Gosforth now Tanya.”

“Well it’s nice to see you; what would you like?

“Could we have a bag of Chips each Tanya with batter on and salt and vinegar please?

“Tanya smiled then made up two parcels of chips then slipped a fish cake in each and winked at Jimmy.”

Have you got any cans of shandy Tanya?

“We certainly have; she took out two cans of “Top Deck” shandy and placed them into a carrier bag.

Jimmy gave her the pound note and she rang the till then gave him his change.

The two boys’ ran over the road and rounded the corner to the pier.
