When they got back to the house Jimmy asked if his mother would take him to Trinity Church in North Shields.

“What is wrong with Trinity in Gosforth Jimmy?

“Nothing mam, I just thought I could see the vicar and visit my parents graveside”

“Oh; if you would like to dear; I will take you I will get you some flowers from the garden to put on the grave.

“Thanks I would like to go fishing afterwards too so could I take some old clothes with me; the vicar will let me change in the vestry after the service. Can you drive me down to the fish quay with Sydney and come back later to pick me up?

“I cannot do that; what if something were to happen to you.”

“Look mam I have been going down to the fish quay since I was five years old I know everybody down there I can call in and see Geordie Patterson my fathers cousin when we are done and I will get you some fresh fish to eat.”

“Jimmy you are still only eleven years old.”

“I will be twelve in six weeks time mam; you have to trust me. I am a big boy now.”

“Pat smiled then nodded, alright Jimmy I will trust you.”

Jimmy kissed his mother on the cheek and gave her a hug before heading off to the bathroom then into his bedroom.

He put on his pyjamas then got into bed he picked up his book and opened the page where he’d left off and began to read.

Pat told Michael what Jimmy wanted to do; was I right to say yes?

“If you hadn’t it may have alienated you; as it is you have gained his trust.

Jimmy must have some independence love, if he is to grow. Boys like adventure; I know I did at his age,

“I know Michael but I worry that something bad will happen to him.”

“There are worse things that boys his age get up to so we should think ourselves lucky.”

“I suppose you’re right.”

“I have to go into work tomorrow so I could drop him off if you can pick him up later.

“He is going with Sydney so I would need the car to bring them back so you are best off just going to work; anyway you took them both out the last time to Ingram Valley.”

“Alright then it’s settled; do you fancy a night cap before we hit the hay.

“Go on then just a small one.”

Jimmy took two glasses out of the china cabinet then poured out two whiskeys.

He added some ice from the fridge then handed his wife one of them they sat together on the sofa just cuddling each other and sipping on the whisky.

“There won’t be any fooling around then tonight Mr Connor’s if you have work in the morning will there?

“I don’t know about that Mrs Connor’s shall we finish these in our room.
