The New Tynesiders - Little Town - Book 2

"The New Tynesiders" follows the story of Akan Badoe; a Ghanaian immigrant who comes to settle in the North East along with many other ethnic groups. His struggle for acceptance in a racially bigoted Britain are documented. The story also follows young Jimmy Connors Hepple the boy from the "Little Town" story who is adopted by an eminent surgeon and his wife after a tragic accident where both his parents are killed in a gas explosion.
Jimmy meets Sydney a young black boy and they become friends. Jimmy the adventurer wants to work in the Arctic like his hero Sir Robert Falcon Scott. Sydney a doctor. The story takes you on a journey through the boys childhood into adulthood where colour, creed,or religion have no boundaries. The New Tynesiders will take you back from 1948- 1966.

When Sydney’s 12th birthday arrived Jimmy and his adoptive parents were all invited so in keeping with their customs they all dressed in white with red patterns around the neckline the men wore white trousers underneath the smock like jackets. The dresses came down to the floor. They all wore hats too Patricia had bought a headscarf type hat and both Michael and Jimmy wore a pork pie type hat with matching red trim they all wore sandals so they could be easily slipped off at the door. They knocked on the door on the Saturday afternoon although Preparations for the feast and dance had been going on for two days.

Michael gave Jimmy a red envelope to give to his friend and Michael and Patricia bought him a book on the heart and how it works. There were coloured drawings inside of the arteries and valves within the heart. It also showed surgical procedures.


Alicia wore a beautiful white silk dress with a blue pattern on it with a matching hat.

“Please come in.” they took off there sandals and made their way down the passage then into the living room which was decorated with fine curtain material with red and gold trims there was a low table but no chairs in the room.

Other guests were arriving and soon the room was nearly full Alicia brought them all a drink.

There was no sign of Sydney until the music started and down the stairs in a white and gold outfit with a hat similar to the one both Michael and Jimmy were wearing except his was gold trimmed. His father came down stair behind him then led him to the centre of the room where everyone clapped and cheered.

Both Michael and Patricia were introduced to Sydney’s father.

“Hello; I am Kofi Ahomet I am very pleased to meet you both Sydney has told me so much about you Doctor Connors and your beautiful wife too who I believe is a physiotherapist at the hospital not far away.”

“You are well informed Kofi and I know that you work in structural engineering.

“Yes it takes me away from home quite a lot but I do try and keep in contact with my son by phone. Alicia and her friends all helped bring the food out and it was placed on the long table.  Alicia gave the Connor’s family a plate each and some cutlery.

There was a huge plate and Alicia said that it was called Oto, it is mashed Yam or what you call sweet potato and boiled eggs.

Then we have a stew called kelewele and there is plantain and rice and fish what we call “One man Thousand”. There are some maize fritters on the corner.

There are different types of fish with rice and peppers and there is chicken.

They tried a little of everything until they found something that they really liked.
