“What a beautiful morning it is said Michael Connors to his son as they packed two rucksacks with sandwiches, pork pie, biscuits, and drinks. Michael showed Jimmy how to fasten the straps on the rucksack that had an aluminium frame to make carrying easier. He wore a thick cream coloured jumper a pair of corduroy trousers and a woollen hat with a pompom on it. Patricia had bought his some thick woollen socks and a pair of hiking boots. Michael showed him how to put dubbin on them not only to keep them in pristine condition  to soften the leather. Jimmy’s feet were hard anyway with wearing boots for school when he lived in trinity Street with his mother and father. Patricia had got up around six o’clock to make a large thermos of coffee for them and their sandwiches. She kissed them both before they left to pick up Sydney who was sitting at the window looking out for the black Hillman Hunter it was only six forty five but he had been ready since six o’clock.

Alicia had made him a packed lunch and some drinks and put them into his rucksack. He wore a pair of brown corduroy shorts and brown woollen socks and a pair of brown boots. His jumper that his mother had knitted last winter had a picture of a palm tree on it with a blue sky and the sun going down over the ocean. He also had a woollen hat. His mother wrapped his coat and put it into the rucksack with a waterproof cagoule.

“Here they are mamma, shouted Sydney as he grabbed his bag and made for the front door.

Jimmy got out of the back door as Michael got out of the front and they both greeted Sydney and his mother who had come to the front door. Jimmy took Sydney’s Rucksack and placed it carefully along side the two rifles and the other bags in the boot of the car. Then they all quickly got in and they were off.

“How long will it take to get there dad asked Jimmy excitingly?

“I reckon we could do this in an hour. Michael looked in the glove compartment of the car and took out the road map. Here have a look and tell me where we are and see if you can find where Ingram Valley is on the map.

The two boys’ studies the map until they saw Newcastle then followed the route until they came to a place called Hartside and up to the Valley Pass.

“Found it they shouted.”

“Good now you keep looking at the map and make sure that I’m going the right way.

“Do you know the Anglo Saxons built forts around Ingram Valley? Some as old as the Iron Age I believe.

“Really dad, are they still there now?

“Yes, we will also come across the Church of St Michael.”

“Is that who you are named after Doctor Connor’s?

“I guess so said the doctor smiling.
