“I don’t see why not as long as you are home in time for your bath for school.”

“Hooray! Both boys shouted.

If Michael came at seven am would Sydney be ready Alicia?

“We get up at dawn in our house Patricia; I will make sure that he is ready.

“I would take a raincoat, a woollen hat, and some boots if he has them or some wellingtons as it gets a bit boggy in places.

Alicia pointed to the house along Henry Street and Pat pulled up outside Jimmy got out and opened the door for Sydney’s mother then said goodbye to his friend.

Alicia thanked Patricia for her hospitality then went inside the doorway she turned and waved as the car drove away.

Akan returned home from putting in a half shift he quickly washed then ate Jollof a rice and chicken dish with Ghanaian coleslaw.

“Where is our daughter Efie?

“She is out playing in the back lane with her friend’s husband.”

“Are we going out today?

“We could go to south shields on the ferry to the market.”

“Alright then go get Eliza and I will get ready.

Going out into the back lane through the green door Efie saw a large group of children playing rounder’s. She called for her daughter who immediately came running over to where her mother was.

“Your father wants’ us to go out to South Shields on the ferry so tell your friends you will see them later.”

Eliza ran back to her friends and told them that she was going out.

Her mother had plaited her hair and she changed into the dress her mother had made for her and put on some white stockings and black painted leather shoes.

Efie dressed then put on some red lipstick then put on her white coat and white hat.

They set off for the ferry landing.

The turned onto borough road then went down the bank towards the ferry where a small group of people were waiting.

The ferry arrived and the bell sounded for people to board. Akan walked down the gang plank and got onto the ferry. They found a seat and sat down as the ferry pulled away and began to make for the other side of the river.
