“It was a terrible accident Alicia three people lost their lives.

“Was there another child, Alicia put her hand to her mouth as Pat went on to tell her how an elderly widow up stairs to them had inadvertently left on the gas cooker that had just been installed and went to bed. It was around three o’clock when Mrs Clay woke up coughing and lit up a clay pipe that she smoke and the house exploded bringing down the chimney stack and wooden beams on top of her and the family below. Jimmy was taken into care where he had a terrible time , he was abused by his carer and other boys she was supposed to be looking after; we couldn’t stand back and allow that to happen so we adopted Jimmy. Michael and I cannot have children of our own.

“I see that he has a better life now than the one he came from.”

“Jimmy is a lovely boy Alicia’ he was well cared for and loved by his parents but they lived very simple lives.”

“I too have a very simple life, but it has not stopped me from giving to my son the best.

“I want him to succeed and make a better life for himself here in England.

“Sydney has told me he wishes to be a doctor when he grows up; that is highly commendable for an eleven year old boy. I had to study every night for some five years before I qualified as a Doctor.”

“Sydney is a very determined boy Michael; once he sets his mind on something there is no changing him.”

“I’m sure that he will be successful Alicia; he has a caring disposition and I will help him as much as I can.

“I think we are going to be good friends Doctor Michael; thank you. Now I must take my son home before he overstays his welcome.

“If you will allow me I will drive you home said Pat.

“That is very kind of you; thank you.”

Michael if you can get the boys, I will get Alicia’s coat.

“Of course love said Michael getting up from the armchair. Michael stood at the bottom of the stairs and shouted up, shortly after the boys came down.

“I am taking Mrs Ahomet and Sydney home in the car, I won’t be long.”

“Can I not come with you mam?

“Alright then go put on your shoes.

Both boys went down the passage where there was a shoe rack and put on their shoes and coats that were hanging up in the passage.

“Alicia’s leather sandals were also in the passage and she slipped them on.”

When Pat had put on a pair of black flat shoes she liked for driving she opened the passenger side for Alicia to get in. The boys got into the back where Sydney held onto his new book.

Michael stood at the door and waved them off.
