Pat was waiting for them in the car when she returned; “I see you got one then.”

“Yes mam look! It’s about Captain Scott’s expedition to the South Pole.”

Jimmy sat in the back seat and opened the book at the first page.

“Through Stormy Seas” Scott’s Last Expedition.

Chapter one

The first three weeks of November have gone with such a rush that I have neglected my diary and I can only patch it up from memory.

The dates seem unimportant but throughout the period the officers and men of the ship have been unremittingly busy.

Jimmy looked up and smiled at his parents then continued reading. He had read nearly ten pages when the car reached Bellevue. Pat pulled up outside the door and Jimmy got out and opened the boot of the car and began to take out the shopping. Pat looked at her husband and smiled. Jimmy was very strong and took four carrier bags to the door whilst Michael opened it to let the boy in. He placed the carrier bags on the table then went back out but Pat had got the rest and was walking into the kitchen with them.

Michael put on a pan with some milk from the large upright fridge then took out three coffee mugs. Pat and Michael rarely drank tea and Jimmy took a liking to a mug of coffee; he liked chocolate bourbons as well.

“Mam can I have a biscuit with my coffee please?

“Yes, but just the one because you won’t eat your tea.”

Jimmy placed a mat on the table then put the mug of coffee down then opened the biscuit barrel Jimmy thought about sneaking two biscuits instead of one but he was good and helped himself to one.

“Here you left your book in the car, said Michael.

Great! He opened the page where he had left off and his head went down and he was oblivious to everyone around him; he was Captain Scott.

It was just after five o’clock when there was a knock at the door Michael went to answered it.

“Hello is Jimmy in; said the little lad.

“You must be Sydney Right?

“Yes, Doctor Connors.”

“Come in son; Jimmy is in the kitchen with his head in a new book.
