On the Saturday morning Pat Connors took Jimmy shopping with her and her husband Pat took her car as it had more room in the boot. Pat turned on the radio in the car to the sound of “Cathy’s Clown” by the Everly Brother’s. Jimmy immediately began to sing along. “You have a lovely voice Jimmy; you should be a singer.”

“I am going to have your voice trained by a professional then you can make a choice to either sing or be a historian.” What do you say to that son said Michael?

“Well it would be a good back up wouldn’t it?

“I want to go to college then onto university mam; I want to make you both proud.

“We are proud of you already Jimmy son.”

Pat pulled in outside the Co-op store and they took a trolley to place their shopping into.

“Jimmy goand have a look and if you see anything that you would like for tea tonight put it in the trolley son.”

Jimmy raced around the store until he saw an apple and blueberry pie then called for his mother.

“Can I have this mam?

“Do you think your friend will eat it?

“Yes I do mam; please may I have it?

“Go on then but we need something that you both like to eat for tea fist.”

“Everyone loves fish mam so can we have Birdseye Cod Fish Fingers; beans and chips.”

“Would you not like me to make a pie for you or mince and dumplings?

“If you like mam he said dejectedly.”

“Can you go and fetch a bottle of pop whilst your father and I choose some wine.”

“My mother used to make me a shandy with lemonade and beer.”

“Well I’m sorry Jimmy but you are not old enough to drink beer.”

“Can we go to the library mam I want to read a new book?

“Michael will you take Jimmy to the library and enrol him whilst I get the rest of the shopping.

“I will be done in thirty minutes so I will meet you both at the car park.

Alright love said Michael as he kissed his wife.

Gosforth library was bigger than the one he used to go to with his mother. The lady behind the counter was very helpful and they filled out another card and he was able to get up to four books. Jimmy went straight to the history section.

“He looked along the rows of books until one caught his eye. He eased it out from the other books then looked on the back cover. There was a photo of an explorer in uniform

But on the front cover he was dressed in canvas looking clothes and big ice boots.

The title was “Through Stormy Seas” Robert Falcon Scott’s Last Expedition.

He came back to the lady on the desk; that kindly stamped it out for him.

“I got one dad he whispered.
